Mini_Max questions?

So I just bought a Mini Max last week, after having a large BGE for sometime. I am intending to use the MM for camping etc... Does anyone have any specific MM tips and/or tricks?

I cooked simple burgers on it the other day, while they came out good, it tasted like the lump was not fully ignited. I think perhaps I closed the lid too soon etc.. Also how much lump would you typically put in a Mini Max.....up to the fire ring?

Like a little train...chugging away!

Was able to fit 7 burgers on...with MAYBE room for 1 more.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Leave the lid open while it's warming up, comes up to temp much quicker.
Get a woo and stone from the ceramic grill store.
Make sure you have the updated handles.
    Get a kick ash basket.
Just personal preference, but I use kingsford a lot for quick hot cooks.
And get a small shop vac.

+1 to what Jeremiah said (well maybe I could take issue with the kingsford :)  but that's a personal preference you'll need to determine)

Adding my $.02 is to fill the fire box up to the fire ring!  More is better in the MM.

    Have fun with it!

Thanks for the tips...I am a big fan of the CGS, if fact, already ordered the Woo and Stone and it was delivered last night. This morning I was checking the fit, and it seems I have a problem. The Woo is hitting the back felt line, when I close the lid. This can't be right, and when I put a grate on top....its even worse. Maybe I measured incorrectly and ordered the wrong one hummm?  (older Woo 075 from CGS)

Your hinge seems to be opening like it's upside down!

The Stache, you are 100% correct. I had to do a little Egg surgery.....all is right with the world again! I compared it to my Large BGE and the store put the hinge on upside....SMH...lol.

Good catch and thank you for your help!

If you get the woo, get a wok also. I like mine for stir fries and general non-Chinese saute duties.

Large BGE & Mini Max for the wok. A few old camp Dutch ovens and a wood fired oven. LSG 24” cabinet offset smoker. There are a few paella pans and a Patagonia cross in the barn. A curing chamber for bacterial transformation of meats...
"Bourbon slushies. Sure you can cook on the BGE without them, but why would you?"

    1. Buy a High-que
    2. Toss the spring deal behind your temp gauge
    3. Toss the black metal top (not needed) control via bottom vent

It seems the MiniMax travels rather well. I have taken it camping, and basically packed it in the back of the Expedition, and drove rough road, and off road with no problems. Just don't be stupid and not secure it in place. I love our MM, and find it very portable.

SBGonzo our stories seem similar. I have had an LBGE for a little while and recently added a MMX for travel. I am currently waiting for a new hinge assembly for my Large so I am doing more cooking on the MMX. Fit 4 nice NY strips and 3 baked potatoes on it Friday. Got the steaks close and then pulled them and the taters off, opened the bottom and took off the top, it took about 10 minutes to get the grill to 700 degrees for searing.

Also cooked a 7# pork butt last weekend. Once I got the temp dialed in it went really well and produced perfect results. Still getting used to the settings for temps, but every cook helps.

    Get the following:

Woo, stone, drip pan, platesetter, pizza stone (yea overkill but u will be glad you have three stones and platesetter fits woo perfectly btw), wok, party que setup OR Smobot ( get to their funding link on this website At kickstarter), and a lodge 5q double dutch

For campimg be sure to have a small battery powered fan or bellow to stoke fire upon startup

As to traveling with mm, be sure to snug it down with bungees and secure it to a hook or base of aomething in your vehicle.   I put cardboard and old towels between ceramics including lid to base contact to help minimize any banging around.

The mm willdefinitely be a hit in the wilderness and it is a tough little grill.

    Keep picts coming
