Broken bernzomatic 8000

the black knob just broke into three pieces last night. I called the company and they told me to take it back to Lowes---that Lowes should hand me a new one and Bernzomatic will reimburse them.

Anyone ever had to do this?  No idea where my receipt is for it now. I have a feeling I'm going to get screwed on this ...

Lowes is usually pretty good for stuff in my case. They have that myLowes card/app that tracks purchases(not likely to help now) but may help for future stuff. Worst-case, I'd expect them to at least offer store credit.

If you paid with a credit/debit card they may still have a record of the purchase in their system.

It probably broke because you have a kamado joe...

Do what Bernzomatic said. You won't know till you try. No one here will either. Maybe ask the KJ guys.

Just got a TS8000 and got rid of Looftlighter. How old and how/where was it usually stored, hope you don't mind me asking.

Good idea to check with Lowe's, specially if you used a CC. I have the TS4000, could not see a use for the adjustable flame. Of course, I only use to start the kamados and for copper pipe plumbing work.

Let us know how it works out Chris. Which Lowes are you going to Peach Orchard, Bobby Jones, Evans, or North Augusta?

If you are just looking to exchange I bet they will do so with no fuss.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

@Canugghead, my TS8000 is about 7 years old and gets stored both inside and outside. The propane does not like the cold. I have had three problems with mine. One of the set screws on the torch head loosened up once. Easy allen wrench fix. Twice, I had spider webs (I guess) clogging up the works. Funky looking flame that wouldn't light anything! The spiders or whatever got compressed air (bet they loved that)! Otherwise, it's been perfect.

Thanks @Carolina Q for the heads up. I store mine in the house so that should minimise spider web problem, will also keep an eye on the three hex screws that I can see.

@chrisc133 Good luck with Lowes. If all else fails I was wondering if the rotary dial knob from a dimmer switch or old radio could be glued on.

Take it to lowes and if they give you lip call the same customer service number, or ask them to.

I once had to do that with a used toilet seat. The slow close failed within a month of installing it on a seldom used toilet. It was rather embarrassing. I told them "I cleaned the crap out of it" meaning that I had cleaned it beyond clean enough to handle in anticipation of the odd return. After I said that I just hung my head and shut up for the rest of the process.

They ended up calling the customer service line and getting it straight with them!

    Update:

@johnkitchens I took it to the Evans Lowes last night.  The lady told me the return policy was 30 days...and I explained to her what customer service told me.  She called over a manager and he just said..."well, if that's what they told you, ok".  They handed me a new kit--with a new gas cylinder.  Not a lot of fuss.

@Skiddymarker I don't use the adjustable knob either...but just had run out of gas and was changing the cylinders.

@canugghead I thought it was only about a year or so old...but I guess I've had my kamados longer than I've thought.  It might be getting close to two years.  It was the grey unit...not the black one.  It's stored inside or in the garage.

The box now says "limited lifetime warranty".  I read the documentation, and units purchased after June 2016 are included in the lifetime warranty.  Units prior to that have the one year warranty.  Just an FYI if you get one of the new black units...you are covered if something breaks now.

the 4000 is really all you need to light your lump, 8000 is overkill.

as mentioned, spider and such can, after awhile, interfere with the flame.  a quick cleaning (blowout) of the tube usually fixes it.

the guys as Worthington (Bernzomatic) will tell you to remove the bottle if storing for long periods.  they say the gas pressure will destroy the o rings in the torch.   my torches usually last several years before I need to replace them. the bottles last a long time too, recommend the yellow mapp bottle, it works better upside down than propane, blue bottle.

I disagree. I've used both and to me, the only noticeable difference between MAP Pro and Propane is the price. My propane bottles are always upside down when lighting lump and they work every bit as well as MAP Pro. Have for years. It's the MAP Pro torch head, not the gas, that works better upside down.

Propane is 1/3 the price too! $11 (14 oz MAP) vs $4 (16 oz propane).

Agree with @Carolina Q propane works just fine. I usually have a MAPP bottle on the torch for plumbing and for the 30 seconds or so it is used to light the egg, not a big deal. It is the torch that will work upside down, not the bottled gas, IMO.

Glad it worked out for you Chris. Duh, I never thought about the LLW; thanks for the heads up, I just checked my package and user manual, there's no warranty info mentioned anywhere!  Fortunately, LLW is mentioned in Canuck Lowe's online product description... I saved a PDF print copy and filed it with my online purchase receipt for future, phew!  I'm saving the yellow MAPP bottle for plumbing project since I have at least six bottles of green and blue propane bottles in the garage.
