OT: Home security system

Looking to get one installed in my home.

Had one company come out today to give me a quote. Here's the breakdown......

- (1) CCTV-HD_1080P 8 ch DVR
- (1) CCTV- 2TB hard drive
- (1) Non fuse breaker power distributor 8ch
- (8) CCTV HD TVI 1080 dome cameras
- Hardware, supplies, etc.
- Installation

$1684.95 with 2 year bumper to bumper warranty

Can anyone tell me exactly what I should be on the lookout for? Special features, wants VS. needs? Anything I should absolutely get?

Is this system monitored or backed up to the cloud or does it store the video on the dvr that stays in your home?

We already have a frenchie. I'm over having a big dog. I've had a few and they all tore my backyard up.

It records to a DVR in my house.

We had a similar system at the office. The hard drive died a couple of times, and we had to replace the power supply twice.

One thing to think about is if you get broken into they will take the DVR. Then you will not have a recording of anything concerning the break in.

Not trying to talk you out of it, but I went with Nest cams because they are instantly on the cloud. Even if someone steals the camera it records up until the second they pull the cord.

My favorite call is..."We're in your area.  Do you have a home security system?"
Me. Yes we do. Drop by and see if you can get in! Followed by  & click and then BLOCK.
For the record we have had a monitored security system for many years along with a Mal or 2 and a small arsenal.

    I'm a tight wad.

I have a simply safe system,  ring door bells, and a game cam.

    Zmodo and do it yourself..

I received 16 cameras and a HighDEF PTZ for the front porch for 650.  The install is not brain surgery if you have the means.

    I.E

    some Cat 5 wire
    a P.O.E switch
and the ability to crawl through an attic or craw space and poke some holes

You probably do not  need HD cameras everywhere. I would probably say the biggest deterrent is seeing those red eyes staring at you in the night

    Have:

    Had:
    LBGE / Lang 60D / Cookshack SM150 / Stumps Stretch / Stumps Baby

They should come out with a system that starts spraying a visible gas cloud into the home once a breakin has been detected.  Could just be harmless smoke.  But nobody is going to hang around once they see/hear a gas cloud forming inside the house, because they will have no idea what it is.  Would also make it harder for them to see your stuff to steal it.
  • @r8rs4lf PM me later today and I will respond tonight. This is what my company does and it can get a little...overwhelming.  I can give you a few pieces of advice to make sure you don't go overboard while still getting what you need. (Figure that shouldn't be posted on the board)

That's why my DVR is locked in a closet.

That would make it a little harder to steal, but it could still happen.

  • I have my DVR hidden away. I made a cage of sorts out of two pieces of flat bar that are locked together and bolted to a wall. I have a busted security system DVR "wired up" that will hopefully fool any burglars.

How about the outdoor nest cameras? I have outlets under my eaves in just about every corner of my home.
