BLT Sushi Roll

We're starting to take a liking to Sushi. Not all of it, but enough to keep us trying stuff we thought we would never eat. Fortunately, not all Sushi is raw. And even the ones that contain raw meats can be quite tasty.

So nowadays, when Sushi is available, we don't walk away.

Never one to be shy about trying something new on the Egg, when someone on Facebook posted this creative idea about a favorite sandwich, the BLT, I thought I had to give it a try. Only I would be cooking on the Egg instead of the stove.

The only thing missing from this version of the BLT is the bread. Everything else is just what you would expect in the flavor. Pretty cool...

Anyway, here are a few photos of our first time at making BLT Sushi.

My GriddleQ

Just spread the mayo on the bacon mat, lay on some lettuce and tomato, and roll it up with a Sushi Roll roller.

And you have a BLT Sushi Roll.

Then slice with your trusty Sushi knife (a gift from some dear friends)

And Waa Laa, my first BLT Sushi.

Isn't that clever...

And yes, the BLT flavor was definitely and deliciously there in every bite.

Note: The recipe actually calls for cooking the bacon on a wire frame in the oven. Next time I'll still cook it on the Egg but set up to 'bake' the bacon instead of 'frying' it.

Oh, and My Sweetie added a bit of Zatarain's Creole Mustard to a few pieces and it took it to an even higher level of deliciousness.

If you YouTube BLT Sushi you will get a number of short videos that tell you how to do it.

Now you can try Sushi....

  • Looks delicious... a big roll of bacony goodness.

But I have to get on my soapbox here. This is NOT sushi. I know you didn't name it, so not blaming you. This just drives me nuts for some reason. Sushi refers to the vinegar-cooked rice. Not raw fish, not anything but the rice. There is zero reason to call this sushi. The only thing close to this being "sushi" is that it is rolled, in that case we might as well call burritos "sushi" too.

I feel better now. Rant over.

I thought the same thing myself.  I just thought the idea was cool.  And it works.  I certainly didn't want to change the name of someone else's idea.

Great creation and result right there.  Always a winner when a bacon weave is in the picture.

Thanks.  It wasn't my idea but I thought it was cool enough to try.  But it was my idea to cook the bacon on the Egg using my GriddleQ.  After that, it was pretty much winging it.  I think a lot of Eggheads are creative and don't always realize it.  Just by altering a recipe's ingredients slightly or cooking it using a different devce requires a certain amount of creativity.  This is especially true for someone who has only done a lot of cooking on gas grills or stoves.  Now they have to adjust to a new way of cooking.  And not surprising, some bring along their methods to the Egg.  When they share it, we all benefit.  So just keep an open mind and one day you are going to eat something really good and think, "This is something I can cook on the Egg."  Do it, and if it turns out great or even badly, share it with us.  We love creativity.  Someone else may get inspired to try it too.

THANK YOU for posting these pictures and not video only!  Video's great for some things, but I really enjoy being able to look at the images for however long I want to, maybe even make them a bit larger and really look, instead of having a video rush them away.  Many thanks!

And I don't know much about sushi, wouldn't have thought that bacon roll had anything to do with sushi, but what do I know?  Main thing is, DAYUM it looks good!!!  :)

Thank you. You are correct. Bacon is not normally associated with sushi.  I think the creator of this particular recipe used it because of how the BLT was formed.  I decided not to change the name for my firsr try at it.

Here's a good definition of Sushi that will help you to better understand their many traditional combinations.

     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sushi

Like many foods, the name "sushi" has evolved into many applications.  Some are no doubt for commercial purposes but some are just home kitchen creations that needed a name.  I even saw a 'Cajun Sushi' recipe.  Why not? Cajuns use a lot of rice in many of their dishes, so why not incorporate the rice and other ingredients into a sushi-style roll and call it 'Crawfish Sushi' for no better term.  Of course, Sushi Purist's frown on mixing and matching traditional sushi in such a way.

I just thought it was a novel way to create a breadless BLT.  And it actually worked well.

As for video vs. photos, you do realize that you can pause the video at any point for as long as you like.  My next version of the BLT Sushi will be made into a video with appropriate music.

I'm an odd guy, and for some reason, I enjoy looking at the images at whatever rate works for me, but when it's a video I feel stuck having to watch it at someone else's pace.  Parts of it I'd want to slow down, but other parts I'd speed up, feel like I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for it to get to the next part I'm more interested in.  I'm sure most folks love the videos -- by all means, do whatever makes you happy!  For myself, I usually just skip the videos.

And thanks for the sushi link -- that was interesting!
