@Focker Big Green Pest Fest...I would make that an annual event. gutting station, processing station, and eating station. From Field to Fork in 45 minutes.

@FarmerTom you just let me know where to register. =)
I'm in. No need to register, we'll just show up in November...eggs, guns, bows, knives, in hand, and push those 30.  =)

This continues to evolve nicely. Everyone helping out a brother egger, and meeting up for a good time.

I hope you are not getting nervous......about a few bourbon drinking, rifle carrying, BGE dudes showing up to help you work through your problem. What could possibly go wrong?

  • Wow!  I was too tired to drag out the laptop last night.  Didn't realize I had begun the venison apocalypse.  I do wish there was some way to accommodate my fellow egger hunters.  Maybe some crop destruction tags during the summer.  But my son would disown me if I disrupted his deer season.  Both he and his wife are avid hunters.
Here is a pic of his tree stand or more like tree house.  It's on a narrow wooded ridge and he has several shooting lanes cleared so he can watch several directions.
Perhaps when the guys who also hunt on us are no longer able to hunt, I could start an egghead lottery, sort of like the elk hunt, but no fees.  I would like that.  Finally get to meet some of you folks.

  • And YukonRon, I envy you getting back to the Gorge.  We used to go there quite a lot.  My wife and kids and I backpacked in once and spent 5 days back off a trail.  Set up camp and took it easy.  Just enjoyed the quiet and beauty of Eastern Ky.  It's a shame though the way some trash up some of the scenic spots and the theft that is rampant in the parking areas.
Have a great weekend.  It's a special place in Ky.

    You talking Red River Gorge?

  •  bgebrent   Yes, YukonRon said he was heading there this weekend with his wife and MM.  Might have to spy him out and get some good grub, he might even have some of those famous slushies. Though, if you are familiar with the Gorge, probably don't want many of them. Not a good place to take a misstep.

An amazingly beautiful place.  Almost lost my life there as a young lad that knew I was invincible and could do anything.  No missteps there.

I was raised in that area. There are not too many places in the RRG you can go these days, and not see a few people rambling through. However, a few of those areas do exist. It is supposed to be a beautiful weekend, and I am looking forward to it. There will not be bourbon slushies on this trip, maybe a glass of wine with dinner or at the campfire, but that is about it.
    @bgebrent and @FarmerTom
In the last 4 months there have been 2 people that have lost their lives. It is as dangerous as any national park or national forest area in the United States. Keep it together and practice good sense, and you will be fine. If you don't you become famous, and you will get your name in the paper. Under the obits.

Ok got a question. Remington 7mm or Winchester 300?
    Me personally: 7mm.

    .300 hands down.

If it were for shooting deer in a large field, I'd take a .308 over either one of them.

I don't hunt enough to answer that.  I use a Remington .243 and my son a .270.  I have taken deer with my .22-.250.  Hope to use my AR in .223 this fall.  It's rare for us to shoot beyond 150 yards.  Just too many trees and brush.  And they seldom are out in the wide open.  I tend to think placement is far more important than caliber.

Magnums on whitetail is overkill unless you're routinely shooting over 500 yards. Anything based on a 06 casing is plenty IMO.

Shot placement is absolutely the key, but we're all human and 223, 22-250, or 243 doesnt leave a lot of margin for error, in my opinion. Ive kinda taken a liking to the 7mm08. Nice, light, fast, and plenty of punch.

Me, my Exploder, and my deer gun.
If it's under a half mile, I let it walk.
Field dressing is a breeze, I bag up the chunks of actual good meat left, leave the rest for the coyotes.
