I've been egging almost 3 years. I've always mainly used oil soaked paper towels or starter cubes. I didn't think a torch would make that much of a difference . But I bought a map gas torch for my sous vide stuff. I used it for the first time tonight to light the egg. I now know I'm a huge dumb a** for not listening to everyone and how good it works. Wow I can't believe how fast it came up to temp. I'm a torch man from this day forward.

@RRP use it for browning instead on a pan or throwing it on the grill. It's so nice to have around for creme brulee.2-XLs ,MM,blackstone,Ooni koda 16,R&V works 8.5 gallon fryer, express smoker and 40" smoking cajun

Now one step more. This vs this:

I only use the Mapp for the Mini. All the rest gets the weed burner.Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given a Mini to add to the herd. -

@fishlessman stopped using a torch years ago. After one caught fire or blew up or something. As I recall, it was a good thing he was outside by his lake.NPHuskerFL said:Smokin_Trout said:

Plumbers use propane or mapp indoors, no?RRP said:canuckland -
Yup-but even before the "every day is Saturday" routine, I have always enjoyed the respite afforded once moving in the Q atmosphere, and that goes for SSN (Submerged Ship, Nuclear) or in this case Saturdays, Sundays and Nights.

Just another tip is the yellow bottles of "Map/Pro" gas only burn like 3-5% hotter than cheap green propane tanks. Save some $$ and get the green tanks- you can't tell the difference.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

I made the switch myself a year or so ago. I will never go back.

It's funny, I've been using the map torch since I got my large almost two years ago. I had recieved a box of the rutland Firestarters as an add on to something I had bought a while back and gave them a whirl just to compare recently. I think I prefer the rutland squares over the torch expecially during the winter when the cylinders are cold and I'm standing outside for an extended time lighting. With the rutland I can light one drop it in and mound a little lump over it then walk away.Parker, Colorado

ive had two mapp torch heads catch on fire, they are really not made to hold upside down for any extended time. there looks to be either rubber or plastic seals in the head where the flame adjusts and mine melted out. i just tossed them over the bank into the lakeCarolina Q said:

I will have to stick with my Looflighter. But I do have electric close enough.

Many options.
I have the old golf club by BBQ Guru (love this, but no longer available?), but I also have the cane style benzomatic weed burner, I still prefer to use the paraffin lighter squares if I'm not in a rush as it allows more drinking time etc.... -
With everyone starting their eggs so quickly how do you even get a few drinks in?

Was always an electric starter, but when my trusty five year old Broil King branded starter finally burned out, I could not find an electric that would last. Using a torch does have some sparks and ember explosions that can be worrisome, but found the solution to be some second burn lump on the top, no sparks and catches quickly.
@fishlessman - could it be the torch you used? Bernzomatic is just fine, use it for copper pipe repair all the time, in fact Bernzomatic makes an extention hose that keeps the gas cylinder upright so you can use the torch in any position.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!
