Trump is "Flip-Flopping" on the 20% Tax
"But later on Thursday, Mr. Spicer convened reporters again to say that the tax was just one option under consideration to pay for the wall. Reince Priebus, the president’s chief of staff, told NBC News that the proposal was just one in a “buffet” of options."Mmmmmmm Buffet…..

Wow, look at all the orders he signed this week. Mr.Trump is a different president. That's why he got elected. He just might do it. And if he does??????....I love my eggs but I love my country better, either I will buy a product made here, or they will build them here. That way, Trump wins, America wins, and I win (because I would rather buy a product built here.)Jeremiah said:He's not gonna do it. He's just acting like he is so that he can claim to have fulfilled his campaign promise.

the 9 billion dollar company that makes the ceramics in Mexico is not going to build/retool a mill in America for that little bit of business, so they'll need a new manufacturer. Maybe KJ's manufacturer has capacity.EGGjlmh said:

Businesses way of thinking it: prices 20% higher. Efficiency impacts profit, unless they're complete idiots, they've been doing that already.ToTheMax said:The lefts way of thinking about it - prices will be 20% higher.
The rights way of thinking about it - prices to the consumer will remain the same, but the companies will magically find a way to reduce costs by 20%.

...and here I was, thinking "the wall" was a metaphor for a better system of preventing people and goods illegally entering our border from Mexico.
Nope. Gave him too much credit. Oh well.

Our foreign aid isn't really about handouts. It's about influence. Sure, cut out all foreign aid - which is only about 1% of the US budget.RedSkip said:

Eliminate all aid to Mexico? China would love it. They'll just step in and get more deeply involved in Mexico. In fact, they already are making those moves. Given the Trumpster's mastery of relations with China to date there is no doubt that China would love to fill any void that this issue may cause in US/Mexican relations.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Nobody is saying they can't. You'd have to ask BGE why they don't.yljkt said:

VAT is a value added tax, in Canuckistan we call it the Goods and Services Tax, GST. It is basically a federal sales tax as it does not apply to everything. Just south of me in WA, the sales tax is 8.7%, which I think is 5% state sales tax and 3.7% county/city sales tax. In BC we have 5%GST, 7% PST, provincial sales tax - no city sales tax in Canada that I know of.Gulfcoastguy said:
Currently we have a 60 billion dollar trade deficit with Mexico. We have a lesser trade deficit with Canada. Excuse me if I am mistaken but when we ship goods to England isn't a VAT of 15 to 20 % tacked onto the price. Isn't that a form of tariff in itself?Eoin said:Don't you guys sell lots of sh1t to other countries? 20% the other way might hurt too.
When POTUS says border tax, he really means tariff, I think.
Not speaking for him/her but @Eoin implied that Mexico might retaliate with a like tax on American stuff, soybeans, auto parts, beef etc...Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad! -

While a company can reduce it's profit margins to absorb some of the 20% and try to stay competitive, I fully expect the prices of many goods to go 20% up if this happens.

The other way of reducing costs is to reduce quality. In the history of the world, this has never been done.
