Nope.  Yesterday did spare ribs.  250* dome temp when I put them on at 11am, stayed almost dead on 250* for 6 hours until I took them off.  Opening the lid a couple times to sauce didn't matter.  Went right back to 250*.

Yes get a KAB.... it does work...all the other options mentioned do not allow you to clean as easily and the convenience it provides. It allow me to 100% utilize all the lump in the bag. Shake in a 10 gallon can, place additional new lump on top, light and keep grilling... yes it really is that simple...

When you use the kickash, do you remove the bottom cast iron grate?

I do remove cast iron grate on my large.  I have no issues maintaining temps low or high.

I have one for my small because it's a b%itch to clean.  I do not have one for my large nor do I see the need to get one.  Put the money towards a nice Prime steak instead.

Pair the KAB with a shop vac and you will have a clean egg in under 30 seconds

I recently purchased a kab. I held off for so long due to my perception that sixty bucks was too steep. I still think it's probably overpriced. However I use my kamado often enough that it's worth it to me. Shaking out the ash is quicker and easier than stirring the pot. I would say it's worth the investment if you use your kamado often, but if you are a seasonal or weekend cook, than probably not worth it.

I have something very similar to the KAB -- a "fire basket" from high-que.com that seems to be essentially the same thing with a couple of extra tweaks.

I like it but don't always use it. Worth checking out if you're interested.

I like mine.  I put the KAB in a garbage bag and then shake, or shake into my mulch areas.

WOW! This device looks pretty neat! Anyone else used this and the kickash for a comparison? I Like the fact that it's 100% stainless steel.
  • Those who use KAB and removed cast grate, do u have trouble keeping temps below 300 during low n slows? My vents are 90% closed and it still seems to creep to 300

less air in = lower temps. Could be you're building the fire too large initially.

How does the Kick Ash compare to the regular High Que 9" grate?

No trouble at all, in fact it got easier to hold lower temps once I went to the KAB. Ran right at 250 yesterday for over 5 hours.

To succeed with low temps it's mainly about the size of your fire when you go to dial it in.

I wonder if Tom from the Ceramic Grill Store could fabricate a stainless steel version of the Kick Ash?
  • Got one of these at Lowe's. It's the perfect size for the KAB as the KAB will sit on top of the can without falling in. Just rap the basket down 3 or 4 times and the ash drops right in the can.

It also wedges perfectly in between the legs on the large nest for cleaning out the ash tray.
  • I load my lump up over the fire box to the top of the fire ring, which would bury the handles of KSB.  Is that a problem?

No it's fine. That's what I do too.

I like mine.  Speeds cleanup.  If I am about to start a high temp cook, pull the basket, clear the air holes and ensure good airflow.  Put basket back in and dump more lump on.  I am a dump from the bag guy.  No organizing lump in the egg.
I'd burn the bag the coal comes in too if it didn't affect the flavor of the cook.

I'd personally get a fishbones grate. Its SS and half the price of the KAB. both make the increase in airflow resulting in fires getting hotter at a faster rate
I just saw a Fishbones on Amazon today. Do they work well for quick cleanup too? Just stir and more of the ash will fall thru?

@powak - I'm in the few non KAB guys here but I do have 3 HighQue grate.  Easy peasy to clean out, great air flow and I have one that has been goin for 6 years with no sign of degradation.
No I can't pick up the lump and shake the ash off in a trash can or whatever but I do know that the small lump that is gettin dumped in a trash can by the KAB is being burned in my egg thus making more BTUs for the dollar.  Not knocking the KAB just never understood the infatuation with it.

That sounds like a good deal to me. Is the High Que stainless? And where's the best place to get one?

It does everything a hi q does and much more. I can understand guys like John not wanting it because it's not a necessity, but if you are going to buy a hi q why wouldn't  you buy the superior product, KAB? That simple. Nothing wrong with either the hi q or fishbones imo. I don't really shake out the basket very often. It is easier to do a thorough cleanup if needed. It does protect the side air holes from clogging ( huge ). That said, I bet I'd like the hi q or fishbones too. Hell, I sell the fishbones product in my store.

I used one for a few months (before @Jeepster47 ) wanted it back.  It works really well.  Price is steeper than KAB.

Don't tell your problems to people.  80% of people don't care and 20% are glad you have them.

@pgprescott - I have much respect for you and your opinions but I'm goin to respectfully disagree here.  I've never lost a fire due to blocked air holes in my eggs.  I think (again I don't own) the KAB is a $60 accessory that can't be that different than $32 highque grate.
