Nope. Yesterday did spare ribs. 250* dome temp when I put them on at 11am, stayed almost dead on 250* for 6 hours until I took them off. Opening the lid a couple times to sauce didn't matter. Yes get a KAB.... it does work...all the other options mentioned do not allow you to clean as easily and the convenience it provides. It allow me to 100% utilize all the lump in the bag. When you use the kickash, do you remove the bottom cast iron grate?

I have one for my small because it's a b%itch to clean. I do not have one for my large nor do I see the need to get one. Put the money towards a nice Prime steak instead.Large and Small BGECentral, IL

I recently purchased a kab. I held off for so long due to my perception that sixty bucks was too steep. I still think it's probably overpriced. However I use my kamado often enough that it's worth it to me. Shaking out the ash is quicker and easier than stirring the pot. I would say it's worth the investment if you use your kamado often, but if you are a seasonal or weekend cook, than probably not worth it.

I have something very similar to the KAB -- a "fire basket" from high-que.com that seems to be essentially the same thing with a couple of extra tweaks.
I like it but don't always use it. Worth checking out if you're interested.

I like mine. I put the KAB in a garbage bag and then shake, or shake into my mulch areas.Richmond and Mathews County, VA. Large BGE, Weber gas, little Weber charcoal. Vintage ManGrates. Little reddish portable kamado that shall remain nameless here. Very Extremely Stable Genius.

Those who use KAB and removed cast grate, do u have trouble keeping temps below 300 during low n slows? My vents are 90% closed and it still seems to creep to 300

How does the Kick Ash compare to the regular High Que 9" grate?

No trouble at all, in fact it got easier to hold lower temps once I went to the KAB. I'd burn the bag the coal comes in too if it didn't affect the flavor of the cook.kl8ton said:I like mine. Speeds cleanup. @powak - I'm in the few non KAB guys here but I do have 3 HighQue grate. Easy peasy to clean out, great air flow and I have one that has been goin for 6 years with no sign of degradation.
No I can't pick up the lump and shake the ash off in a trash can or whatever but I do know that the small lump that is gettin dumped in a trash can by the KAB is being burned in my egg thus making more BTUs for the dollar. Not knocking the KAB just never understood the infatuation with it.-----------------------------------------analyze adapt overcome2008 -Large BGE. 2013- Small BGE and 2015 - Mini. Henderson, Ky. -

It does everything a hi q does and much more. I can understand guys like John not wanting it because it's not a necessity, but if you are going to buy a hi q why wouldn't you buy the superior product, KAB? That simple. Nothing wrong with either the hi q or fishbones imo. I don't really shake out the basket very often. It is easier to do a thorough cleanup if needed. It does protect the side air holes from clogging ( huge ). That said, I bet I'd like the hi q or fishbones too. @pgprescott - I have much respect for you and your opinions but I'm goin to respectfully disagree here. I've never lost a fire due to blocked air holes in my eggs. I think (again I don't own) the KAB is a $60 accessory that can't be that different than $32 highque grate.pgprescott said:
