I'm considering purchasing an egg. In looking at pictures of the large and the extra large, I notice that they are shaped very differently, the extra large being much more squat. It seems to me that this would put the coals much closer to the grill... Does this differnet shape result in any performance differnces? Aside from cooking capacity, are there any other important differneces between the two to consider? Thanks for your time.

John,[p]When I bought my Large Egg I looked at the XL..[p]The XL has a shorter dome...vs the large[p]The XL uses more coal[p]I think most would tell you buy the large..then in a while save up some money and get a small...[p]Right now I am doing a 9lb brisket...[p]Unless you cook for an army I don't see the need for an XL[p]Just my Opinion

    icemncmth,
The XL does not have a shorter dome, just a different slope so tall objects will hit the dome sooner when placed towards the edge. This gradual slope gives the illusion of the dome being shorter. The base of the Egg is shorter by a little less than 3" and the interior design then forces the standard grate placement closer to the top. The legs on the plate setter are also shorter but this is another issue.
I like my XL very much. The grill space is nice for ribs, wings and ABTs. With a weber 22" grate and a couple fire bricks you can cook for an army, but the XL does hold the heat very and burns very little lump for the grill space. I went almost 30 hours on my first use and still had enough lump for my next 3 shorter cooks. (about 10 hours total)
I also like my large. The dome shape gives you more of a chance to use raised grid systems and to cook tall vertical meals. They are different but both are great.

    John,
I have a friend that has an extra-large. With my experience with my large, and being around his extra, I don't want one. The plate setter is too close to the grill. It is a lot heavier. Unless you do a lot of large volumn cooking, I don't think you will like the Extra. Go for the large. I promise you will love it. [p]Chef Jerry

    Photo Egg,
I agree with your overall summary. I own both. I would add that the difference between the top of the grate and the dome is about 1". On the XL you actually can place more food in the upper part of the dome because the top of the dome is several inches wider. Both are great units.
