What Kind of pepper is this?

A Korean woman in my neighborhood dropped off a bag of these.  They're pretty hot... hotter than a habanero.  Anyone know what kind it is?

thanks in advance.

If Dog Eggerton does another Peri peri (African birds eye) pepper seed giveaway this year be sure to get some.

    They are glorious.

mine took forever to mature.  When they finally did I was so excited i grabbed one and put the whole thing in my mouth and chewed it up.

That's the kind of thing I will only do once...
  • That's it!!!  Thanks.

    any suggestions?  Salsas?  Spice rub/marinade?

  • Hard to say - it's in the thai pepper family, but could be any number of varietals. Here's a comprehensive list with pictures of the various types of oriental peppers

  • It's a Thai Hot Chile pepper. While ten times as hot as a jalapeño, it would have to be 100 times as hot as a jalapeño to be a mild habanero. I have planted both before.
  • I just froze then in ziplock bags mostly but I have also used them to make brownies, pickled them in vinegar, and used them to make kosher dill pickles.

i ALSO THINK tHAI HOT BIRDS BEAK.  i LIKE TO TAKE THE RED ONES CUT THE TOP OFF ADD TO A JAR WITH SOME APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, BROWN TURBINDO SUGAR SOME GARLIC CLOVES LITTLE FISH SAUCE AND LET SIT FOR A FEW WEEKS THEN TAKE MY STICK BLENDER AND PURREE.  kEEPS FOREVER BY THE STOVE.

This Korean paste is hot and makes a nice addition to spicy foods. great for a chicken marinade  mixed with a few other things.

thai pepper,  i use them more than any other pepper. if theres an asian market around you can buy a pillow case full dried for about ten bucks. stir fries, pizza, chili, anything that calls for red pepper flakes. this is a favorite, crying tiger sauce

make alot, its good on eggs, subs etc

steak marinade: says 1-4 hours, i went over night
    2 tbls soy
    1 tbls fish sauce
    1 tsp sugar
    some chopped green onion

    roasted tomato chili sauce:
    6 thai chilis
    1/2 cup chopped onion
    1/2 cup fish sauce
    3 cloves garlic
    16 cherry tomatoes
    1/3 cup lime juice
    4 tbls sugar
    2 tabls pakak hot curry
    bunch of chopped green onions

when the egg got up to about 500, put the chilis in and roasted til they were starting to char but not black, maybe a minute, took them out and added onion and whole tomatoes and did the same thing. let egg climb up for searing temps while back inside tossed some garlic into a dry pan for a half minute on med, added the pakak paste (this paste needs to be cooked according to the label) added a little water to avoid burning, then everything into a food processer. allow to cool, go cook steak

  • Uh, maybe, ask the Korean lady.

Somehow the hot pepper gene skipped a generation with both my wife and I. I can handle hotter/spicier than she can but our kids can eat hot stuff like it is candy.

Try to limit it in my rubs and my cooks.

  • I found fish sauce at Rouse's across the street. As far as curry paste though locally I have my choice of "Red" or "Green" .I'll check at Whole Foods saturday.
