Raised grid for medium Egg
Skrullb
Posts: 666
I went to my local Egg store, looking for something to use for raised direct cooking. The salesman said they don't carry many accessories for medium eggs, so he had nothing there. What are my options for some sort of raised grid? Other than buying a large, like the salesman suggested.
I'm in Fredericksburg, VA, and I have an XL and a medium.

The Woo from Ceramic grill store.

Sounds like you need to find a new dealer too.

They have a ton of stuff there, just nothing for mediums! Weird. There was a device there that clamped into the lower grid, and kinda swung out but he questioned whether or not the lid would close with that. I didn't pay attention to what it was called.DoubleEgger said:Sounds like you need to find a new dealer too.I'm in Fredericksburg, VA, and I have an XL and a medium. -

This is the easiest and cheapest way that I have seen.

Check out the Half Moon Raised Grids with Drip Pan. This gives you the flexibility to cook direct on one half and indirect on the other half.Summerville, SC

What @F3DAWG posted is what did. Works great. It gave me enough room to cook a 14lb seperated brisket with the point on the upper grate and the flat on the bottom.Medium BGE , iGrill2

Wish there was a spider.... here's a pic of mine with bricks in is this thanksgiving:

The vast majority of a accessories are made for the L. The XL is second and so on. That is due to demand. There are a few for the other eggs, but not many. That's a fact. Many aftermarket accessories are only available for the L.

The woo is definitely the way to go for the medium!

Get a Woo, stainless pan and a pizza stone. You will be set for life.Ellijay GA with a Medium & MiniMax

I'll get around to a pizza stone eventually. That seems like something everyone raves about.I'm in Fredericksburg, VA, and I have an XL and a medium.

When you get a stone, buy the 12" stone from BGE. It's better in the woo than the 10" stone from ceramic grill store. More indirect cooking area.Skrullb said:I'll get around to a pizza stone eventually. That seems like something everyone raves about. -
Mine too. Only removed to add lump.DoubleEgger said:

The 10" stone wastes to much space.DoubleEgger said:

Out of all five of my eggs, I love and use the medium the most. And the woo is used for every cook in the medium.

@cookingdude555 does the plate setter fit in the Woo?I'm in Fredericksburg, VA, and I have an XL and a medium.

Spiders are available for the medium now, small too.
Be careful on which stone you recommend for the medium, as stone size is dependent on old vs new fire ring. ID of the old medium fire ring is approx. 12". 12" stone with little vertical clearance over a 12" opening can lead to issues.
We recommend the 10" stone and our 12" stainless drip pan as they work with all medium eggs. The bottom of the tapered 12" drip pan is over an inch above the fire ring when in the Woo and on the 10" stone. So the pan has ample clearance over the 12" (old) or 13" (new) ID of the fire ring. Recommend using foil on the pan to expand coverage a bit more.

try 3 fire bricks from Lowes cost about 5-6 bucks, last forever, works great! All you gotta do is stand them up edgeways on the firing and put grid on top...this will raise to felt line or a little above...works great!Skrullb said:I went to my local Egg store, looking for something to use for raised direct cooking. If you go the 3 bricks route, wrap them heavily in foil. This way if one falls in it likely won't break the firebox.
-
@Skrullb, I don't believe it does. I have the older woo that I bought about 7 years ago or so. It has two removable rods below the grid that allow you to put an indirect item.Skrullb said:@cookingdude555 does the plate setter fit in the Woo?
