...I am very aware of the kinds of research methods flaws pharma companies exploit to demonstrate positive findings for their products; but I'm also aware of the kinds of bias that are so often used to interpret scientific studies to support a particular preference for one type of diet or another.

The American Association for Cancer Research concluded that plant based diets are strongly associated with an overall reduced risk of cancer, and in particular for reduced stomach and colon cancer (I believe that low cholesterol has been associated with higher risk of colon cancer in at least one study). A plant-based diet is also largely responsible for lowering cholesterol levels to below 150. So to reduce cancer risk, I eat a plant-based diet (but also to reduce heart disease risk). The strongest scientific evidence is evidence that comes from multiple sources using multiple perspectives. The health perspectives (cardiovascular, cancer, stroke, etc.) all converge around a plant-based diet, which is why I have made that choice. And that evidence has been mounting steadily over the past 15 years. I try to understand the scientific merits of the paleo approach, but the research is still very murky.

So paleo is better because this how the first humans ate? Perhaps they ate that way because they didn't have anything better to eat. These first humans had a life expectancy of only 20 years. It wasn't until they started farming (and eating carbs) that life expectancy greatly increased. I guess since they didn't have modern medicine we should stop using those as well? Modern illnesses are mostly due to obesity and the fact that we are getting so old.
I think you need to check your facts on life expectancy.  Life expectancy in paleo times is equal (or higher) than right up until 1900.

I think you should re-read your own linked article. Also I don't oppose a low carb diet. I just don't believe that since the prehistoric people had a very limited choice in nutrition (and often starved) that that that is the best food for us. I believe in a varied diet with a moderate intake of carbs and sufficient exercise.

  • In trying to get off my medicines for Psoriatic Arthritis (Humira and Methotrexate), I pretty much switched to the Paleo diet without realizing it and have been able to get off all medications (been five months which is amazing since I used to be pretty much crippled without them).  I feel great for the most part, lost weight and am no longer getting sick all the time.  I eat a lot more fruits and veggies, but no way in hell am I giving up my meats...
  • I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes earlier this year.  The diabetic consultant my doctor sent me to meet with told me to count carbs (+/- 250 grams/day).  That helped but I needed to experiment, evaluate and modify that to get it to fit my overall health goals (getting to a healthy weight & off meds).  I'm really not following Paleo, Keto or Atkins but I'd say it's similar.  It's low carb, that's for certain, and it's working for me.  My glucose & cholesterol is considerably better now than it was following the consultant's recommendations and my weight continues to fall.

Meats, cheeses & vegetables are good but some days I'd give my right arm (I'm left handed) for a loaf of warm, crusty, buttered bread.

Good thing about living in BBQ country. I dominate a low carb diet with ease. Chopped burnt ends and broccoli for lunch today at a local Q joint.
