Anybody ever do a pork butt on the small?

I need to do one Pork Butt this weekend, wondering if my small holds enough lump to go the distance. Has anybody done this? Seems a waste to fire up the XL for one piece of meat.

I don't have a small but do know your fine. Load it up to the top of the fire ring and knock it out. Have a great cook and weekend.Sandy Springs & Dawsonville Ga

Another endorsement with the SBGE. No issues with lump as long as you fill it up as noted above. My biggest challenge is getting it to stay in the 250-280*F range. I have a high-Que grate and I really have to dang near close it up to keep it in that window. FWIW-Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Never worry about having enough fuel if you have an oven you can throw it in.

The small it will be. I have KAB in mine, so never an airflow issue, I too have to almost close it to maintain a 275 temp.XLBGE, Small BGE, Homebrew and GuitarsRochester, NY

I do like butts on the mini all the time, so it can certainly be done on the snall
-
The only thing that was tricky to me was stabilizing the temp the first time. With my small I have to leave my vents on the bottom open wider than I do the large It took some getting used to.LGBE, SBGE,Blackstone,Weber Kettle, Weber Smokey Joe.

It will do it no problem...but if it were me I would throw 4 or so on the XL and then stock the freezer with leftover pulled pork. It makes a great gift for the holidays.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

I have done 5 pound butts in mini with fuel left over. You are good

Heck yeah no problem. I recommend pulling the dfmt after you load the butt and let the temp recover, then put the top back on when you're really at target temp. (Or you can go topless the whole way. But if you try to control from top and bottom initially the airflow may not be enough)Chicago, IL - Large and Small BGE - Weber Gasser and Kettle

Very interesting comments. How about the mini max doing a butt. I never even thought of trying it. I usually use the xl for that and my mini max for the side which is mostly cast iron skillet fried potatoes. I do smoke salmon and shrimp for my lady being I'm allergic to the shrimp. It does perfect.

I have a MM I have done several. Turbo the butts if you want. It works. Just pull the thermometer further out so it does not hit the protein, and fill it up with lump."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

I just completed mine in a minimax and it went the distance , got it to stay around 250-270 and didn't really have to check on it. I loaded mine up to the top and left the middle fairly empty and only lit one side so it would burn like a snake pattern. Got that tip from another fellow egghead
