New Boos End Grain

A real joy to cut on.........

Price recently fell at my local Costco, so after eyeing it for months, I just couldn't resist.

I'm digging that. Why did you go with round? Are there advantages to it vice rectangular?

  • I like that a lot. Round is nice!!

  • @VB_egger, @JohnnyTarheel: My local Costco only had the end grain in round, and any other Boos boards that were reasonably priced were edge grain. Price on this one was too good to pass up. Came with Boos oil and cream.

From my reading, the major advantage of round is that use is more even - you rotate the board and therefore don't always cut in the same spot as you would with a rectangular board (with which you may become accustomed to always cutting in the same spot). This one is 18" x 3", so it is hefty!!

Im sure it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm personally digging the round!

A good point raised by others is that the round shape makes it harder to store. One more excuse to have it sit on the counter.

Personally, I really dig the round.

I'm having a debate about the board's resting location with my wife at present.  ;)

Note I said "I'm having." I am fairly confident in my negotiation skills, but I have chosen to approach this issue both slowly and cautiously for best results.

This alone has me sold, for two reasons:  My end-grain board is only 1 1/4" or so, and it has "cupped" pretty badly (the center is starting to touch the counter, negating the silicone feet on the corners (mine's rectangular) allowing it to try to spin.  A 3" thickness would be much less likely to cup (I hope to get the local wood milling shop to run it thru their 48" belt sanding machine, to re-flatten it).
Secondly, the 3" height would be MUCH easier for me to work on.  I'm 6'5", and if I ever have my kitchen redone it'll be with taller countertops (screw resale value, I'll be dead then).  Just a 2"-higher cutting surface would alleviate some back pain.
    Cyber-Monday in 5:26....

PS:  Make sure to use the included oil, the beautiful end grain on my board is a dull brown in the center from absorbed food grease.

Counting to ten only makes it Premeditated.

Where are you? I just logged on to Costco.com and they don't list anything by Boos.

Lucky you!!  My costco carries plastic boards :(

I like the round, easier when dealing with small stuff like dicing garlic.  No hitting knuckles on the board.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

I know, I didn't see this one on line either.

My cutting board is similar, but rectangular 21"x28".  It stays on the counter.  In fact, it has become the counter.  We use it to cut everything from fruit to sandwiches to primals.  It saves the need for pulling out a small board or cutting on the counter itself.  If your wife cooks at all, perhaps the convenience to HER would be a good argument.  :)

I use plain ol' mineral oil on mine.  Frequency is whenever I see it start to look like it's drying.  It's cheap and has worked for ~20 years so far.

Unfortunately, although she's a great cook, she has largely given it up. Consequently, I now do almost all of the cooking (which in my books, means I should get the say as far as board location).  =)
