I take it off when I light the egg and only put it on if I'm trying to hold below 400

Really no advantage to leave it on for high temp cooks.
Adjusting air intake with the lower vent can easily hold the higher temp you want.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
It will let the needle wrap on the thermo if the eggs clean. I throw it in the coals to burn the grease off, it can take it.Jacksonville FL

I never take mine off and have never had an issue with heat, it has discolored a bit, but works just fine, even when I do Pizza at 600.
I didn't know there was issues with high heat??

may depend on the size egg. I have an XL, it needs a bigger fire and eats much more air to get to higher temps than a smaller egg would.YYZegger said:I never take mine off and have never had an issue with heat, it has discolored a bit, but works just fine, even when I do Pizza at 600.

I didn't know if they were previous models. Rough day. Not up to speed. Hit the bottle early.

They do get a little gunked up if you do a lot of fatty cooks. But it usually busts free during heat up for me at least. I've only removed to get over 700 for a sear.
I'm thinking of doing a cleaning run with the oven cleaner in a black trashbag left out in the sun for a day or so to clean it up. I think I saw @RRP do something like that to his cooking grid once....

I was cleaning up and apparently they were left over from earlier this year. A book of chocolate liquor bottles. I haven't met chocolate I didn't like, even if it has spirits in it.RedSkip said:Is that dipped in chocolate?!Bill Denver, CO

I've done the oven cleaner method, better to do it on a cool day or at night. Haven't tried burning them off yet. I rotate my cooks on the different grills and they stay half decent but it's about that time again.DaveRichardson said:They do get a little gunked up if you do a lot of fatty cooks. When I did it in the sun I think the heat dried the solvent too quick.Bill Denver, CO

I had the same problem. I learned here on the forum to put the daisy wheel in the egg on the grid when you shut it down with the ceramic cap. The gunk burns off.
Also, to answer your question, the smokeware cap doesn't seize up like the daisy wheel in my experience.
