quick & easy slipped band adjustment done singlehandedly
RRP
Posts: 26,451
Last time I used my large it smoked profusely and a quick inspection revealed my bands had slipped so the dome was standing proud. I have used this same singlehanded fix many years ago, but decided a new single shot picture might help others when their need arises. I loosened the band nuts and bolts just enough so there was some play. Then since I was working at this by myself I grabbed 2 long wood working clamps and a 2 x 3 so I could exert uniform downward pressure sufficient to move the dome down so it was solid against my base. Then while still clamped I retightened my nuts so there could be no play or movement. BTW the whole effort took under 10 minutes and it only took that long since I double nut my bolts as a security issue to keep the 1 nut from turning.

Thank you! Those are used paver bricks from streets laid here in Peoria, IL in the late 1800's. We specified those when we built our home in 1979 and had to pay a premium over that of new brick. Over the initial years we were razzed about not being able to afford new brick etc. What we love about them is nearly every brick is unique.kl8ton said:I like the brick on your house
Then inside is our massive fire place of the same brick.

Honest - it is such an easy fix. OTOH this same method works if your egg is in a nest. I even have gone so far as to suggest using a wide board on top of the dome and lift your wife or small child up to sit on the board. What EVER you do is maintain their trust and NEVER take a picture of them perched up there!Chubbs said:Mine has been like that for 2 years. Now I understand where @SGH is coming from with the money jabs. Just kidding Ron.

Your house looks great.
Thanks for the tip. There is no way my wife is going to sit on top of my XL. I had to try sitting on top of it myself and tighten the bolts.SE PA

@RRP I've got one where the dome and base are lined up, but there is a decent size gap on one side. Same procedure?
And thanks for posting.Phoenix -
If you loosen the bands will the dome rock? Sounds like the plane on dome or base has a hill or valley. You may have to knock it down to get a better idea of the extent of your problem. If not to severe then a valley can be built up with Permatex.blasting said:@RRP I've got one where the dome and base are lined up, but there is a decent size gap on one side. Same procedure?
