I know you have said before you don't have cockroaches up there for some reason, but the last time I was at a LJS was many years ago. I was standing in line to order and a roach ran across the counter! I turned on my heels and walked out and have never been back!fishlessman said:

That ties in to the thought about not developing immunities because of less exposure. However, another thought is that back when people grew their own food many kids may have died from allergic reactions that were not specifically identified as food allergies. Child mortality rates were much much higher back then. Its hard to know exactly the cause of death was for many.Hi54putty said:....
I am of the opinion that many food allergies are caused by the way food is processed and treated in our modern society. I understand that when people grew their own food almost no one was allergic to it.
The experience you and your wife have had with food allergies illustrates that someone could be having reactions without being able to pinpoint the cause. With current medical knowledge and awareness, food allergies are more often identified. Many years ago a child could be just labeled "sickly" without knowing what the cause was. The awareness and perception of food allergies has changed, it is not so clear if more people are allergic than in the past.XL,L,SWinston-Salem, NC -
Educational for sure - plus I just read this piece - I had no idea a set of EpiPens now cost $600. Granted if they save your life that $600 is worth it, but you have to wonder why the price has skyrocketed and how much higher they will be a year or two from now. BTW do insurance companies pay for an EpiPen as a preventative med?DrKrieger said:Wow, this thread really blew up more than I was expecting. Some good advice overall with allergies, especially nut wood being used, haven't used much pecan or hickory so far but good to know. I'll definitely make sure she brings her epipen over just incase.

I'd say your fine so long as your nuts stay clear of your fiance's sister's mouth. New meaning of Devastated otherwise. Allergies are serious business.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL

LOL - but actually the explanation is in the article - the company is doing the ripping off!HeavyG said:

"It's a totally established brand name with little competition," Langreth said. "That gives them freedom to raise the price every year."

It's not preventative. It depends on your plan how much is out of pocket. They always have $100 off coupons on them and with a good insurance plan you are only out of pocket like $50 after the coupon. Also they are only good for a year. They aren't $600 last set we got was like $469 starting price.RRP said:

The company is only able to do that with government help. Epinephrine is over a hundred years old and is cheap to make. However, the FDA has rejected requests to market a generic version. Don't know why but I'm sure lobbying to stop those is involved.RRP said:

There is an alternative type of epinephrine injector known as "Adrenaclick" that only costs about $150-200 for a pair. Not an MD so I don't know why those aren't in wider use.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk -
My cost on them now is around $560 price has gone WAY up, especially since their only competition (auvi-q) was recalled and then totally scrapped by the manufacturer.Lit said:

What's the deal with Adrenaclick - any idea why they are not so widely known/used?Biggreenpharmacist said:
