I get mine at my local grocery store. If they sell bone in short ribs all you have to do is ask them not to cut them and they will give you the whole slab.Narcoossee, FL

Yes, ask for beef plate ribs. They should look like a thick brisket flat with three bones. It will look flatter than you expect, as they thighten and thicken as they cook.
As for your wallet, home made ribs are cheaper than pizza out.

You may be able to tell if the short ribs are plate or chuck by looking at the cross section of the bones. Plate ribs are broad, sort of flat, and are close to touching. Chuck ribs are rounder at one end, and surrounded by relatively more meat.
While both sections share a muscle that is quite tender, the chuck has other muscles w. lots of connective tissue. By standard definition, there are no more than 4 bones in the chuck, and 5 in the plate. Because of their larger size, plate ribs or more often cut into 2 & 3 pc. sections.
