Beer can chicken on the egg
Powak
Posts: 1,412
I'm thinking about trying a beer can chicken on the egg again. First time didn't come out so great. I'm used
to cooking these on the Webber and they always come out super on there but I don't see why the egg can't nail it too. First time I did it, I ran the egg about 350-375 with platesetter in, plate setter level. I'm enticing the idea of doing it raised, no platesetter. Any thoughts on beer can chickens? Egg temp and finish temp of meat? I don't bloody veins even if the breasts are at 165°.

First thing I cooked on the egg was beer can chicken, was always a favorite on the old grill. Ever since I discovered spatchcock chicken on here it's all I've done. Cooks faster, more evenly, and every bit as juicy and flavorful.
375 raised direct or indirect, both are good.Highland, MI

I do mine direct at about 400* raised on an adjustable rig. Usually pull when the thigh hits 170*~ John - Formerly known as ColtsFan - https://www.instagram.com/hoosier_egger

I have found that doing both spatchcock and beer can at 400 raised indirect to be the best for me.Large and Small BGECentral, IL

I gotta try that. I want my crispy skin too. Weber would get crispy skin even if the damn lid was practically balancing on top of the chicken.saluki2007 said:I have found that doing both spatchcock and beer can at 400 raised indirect to be the best for me.

Do you need a hacksaw to do spatchcock?

A good pair of kitchen scissors [like the ones in a knife set] will cut the back bone out easily.Powak said:Do you need a hacksaw to do spatchcock? -
Re beer can chicken, I did two last weekend. Raised indirect around 400. Came out great. Worth reading the amazingribs.com article on this. I've read it and still make chicken this way sometimes, but I stopped wasting beer and now just fill soda or beer cans with water.
Re spatchcock, +1 for good shears rather than using a knife.__________________________

I can't believe this but I actually agree with @Meeeshigan22. Beer can is more of a production and a messier clean-up. I have two nephews that are OSU grads and I'm pretty sure they would shun you for this unforgivable action (or worse). I hope for your sake no other Buckeyes have come across this blasphemy.THEBuckeye said:

I've tried it both ways and thought it tasted great either way. The beer can chicken sure presents better than the mutilated spatchcock chicken

@pgprescott , DId you see the Urban Women's Football Clinic video? He pulled a couple women up on stage w/ him because they were wearing blue. After verbally assaulting them he ordered them to drop and do push-ups. He then yelled at them some more than gave them both hugs. It was classic.pgprescott said:

Sorry but I need some help. First timer and I haven't figured out how to post a new topic.
Butterflied and bricked for me. -
@GrillSg At the top of the page under the Search window click the Green Button that is labeled New Discussion. It starts a new topic.

Just don't leave the beer can in the Egg during damp weather...I did....almost puked when I saw all the mold...

I did not, but I'm a little surprised he gave them hugs. My nephews would have told them to get their a** back in line and do better next time. You guys (Buckeye fans) have a small issue with over zealous behavior. It borders on religion!THEBuckeye said:

Sounds quite funny!

I used to.like beer can chicken too. Then I did spatch and liked it way better. Now I do spatch direct and it's the best way to do chicken. Hands down. Try it and save the beer for u.
