Has anyone tried to pick up a hot PS with the silicon gloves or potholders?.....Feel free to message me if it was a disaster and you'd rather not announce it to the forum !!!!!!!
I've had some gloves for a while and they are perfect for pulling pork....best thing I've found for the way I like it pulled.
I'm tempted to use them along with welding gloves/etc to pick up PS to see what happens....but I thought someone might save me the hassles if it won'r work !!!!
Thanks friends, youre secret is safe with me !!

Just today, I picked up some silicone gloves. The name, which does not I still me with much confidence, is "Hot Hands". If your hands are hot during use, doesn't that mean the gloves have failed?
I think that they're rated to about 450, which means their application will be limited, but I guess time will tell! -
I use welding gloves but have the PS in my hands for only a fews seconds - I have the resting placed already mapped out before picking it up.Northern New Jersey

I like to spend your money, so I will recommend you buy a claw or Lifter for the PS. Once you experience the "look mom no gloves" ease of moving hot PS, you will thank me. I promise. If you have a large, there are several options, if you have an XL, the lifter by Smokeware is the only one I am aware of.

I have some from Amazon that my mother in law got me as a gift. Great for pulling pork. Have had no issues lifting PS or other hot items.

Thanks for the feedback.
I used a pair of welding gloves and a pair of mechanix gloves inside the welding gloves the other day....melted the mechanix gloves to my finger!!!!!!
I want so bad to reach and grab that PS with the silicon gloves....but I'm skeered !!!!!

This! I am going to echo @JMCXL. I have seen multiple times at eggfests, someone pickup a hot platesetter out of the egg with welding gloves, start to look around for where they were going to go with it, trip over something, nearly fall down, their hands start to burn and it must be set down now!
I have a set of the orca silicone gloves which are good for 5 to 10 seconds to hold a hot platesetter. I recently had to replace my welding gloves as I unfortunately found out that the grease soaked leather, from years of use, acts as a great conductor. Lol... Also, there is a big difference in quality when it comes to welding gloves. Don't buy the $12 ones
I've thought about getting silicone mits to wear over my welding gloves~ John - Formerly known as ColtsFan - https://www.instagram.com/hoosier_egger

There is a huge difference between a plate setter legs up used for smoking at 225º and one used legs down for pizza at 475º.
A PS I used to smoke is fine for 15-20 seconds with silicone gloves. Don't wear them, use them like pot holders, double layers of silicone between your hands and the PS. Grab it by the legs
The pizza PS stays in the egg until tomorrow morning. In the immortal words of M.C. Hammer, "you can't touch this". Not with silicone.

I use these to pull the plate setter out. I'll also pull out extra grids, CI pans, etc.

Thanks for that pick Donnie. I believe I can make me one of those. Have plenty of scrap metal laying around and the tools to fabricate it. Would offer to make you one also, but you might go thru 2 or 3 pairs of gloves before I get around to this project. My list is growing and none are getting checked off.

You'll like those gloves. I have the same pair in black. The black hides the stains well.

@dldawes1 I also have a smokeware lifter and love it! I use to use gloves only and got burned a few times, saw this at the local dealer and ended up getting one. I will never be lifting the PS with gloves again how awesome this thing is.XLBGE, MMBGE, CyberQ

+ 1 on those gloves. Incredible how much heat they can take. Good choice.Acn said:I use these to pull the plate setter out. I'll also pull out extra grids, CI pans, etc.

Well said, sir. I bought a pair of welders gloves thinking they might work for a hot PS. I tested with a cast iron pan at 500 - 550. I was only able to hold it about 8 secs.dldawes1 said:Thanks again folks....the forum always comes through !!!

A quick search, that I thought would yield suggestions for glove brands, yielded a better solution. I love this place and I haven't even had time to settle in yet. Thank you, all!L BGE, XL appetite

I've never been a believer in welding gloves after burning the crap out of my fingers. They may sound macho to the unknowing, but they are just leather and your fingers are probably not accustomed to the resistance an experienced welder builds up over the years!*
I've got 4 pair of scilicone gloves and mittens and swear by them! The only warning using scilicone is to make sure your hands are dry and your mitts have no moisture as any wetness inside turns to burning steam!
*BTW my late Father was a bonafide blacksmith and I was always dumbfounded how he could pick up hot pieces out of his forge or after welding something using no gloves!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time
