Fire Ring Question

I am planning on making some fajitas tonight and was planning on removing my fire ring out and putting a grid on top of the fire box to get close to the lump. Good idea? Even necessary?

No, no need to remove the fire ring, just build the lump up to the top of the ring or get a smaller grid to lay on the burning lump. Filling the egg with lump is not a waste as you can snuff it out when finished the cook.

What he said. Pile the lump high and drop the grid low. Good luck and don't forget the pictures...... =)

No no no. What they said. Freight that thing. Never remove innards and fire it up

I use a fire basket from smokeware in my medium.  It sits just on the firering.  Then I set my grid right on that.

That puts me within 1/2 " of lump.  Perfect for carna asada.  Plus don't burn up a bunch of extra lump.

Or I use my minimax with grid on fire ring.  Either way works well.
