My Eggs are taking a Hiatus

My eggs are going to have to rest for a few days.  I was at the University of Kentucky Samaritan hospital Tuesday morning to finally get my left hip totally replaced. 36 hours later, Wednesday evening, I was setting in my recliner at home.  We had no idea it would go so well and get to come home so soon, but I'll take it.  I hope this is the final installment of repairing injuries from that damn, blind 450 lb. steer 6 years ago.
So I'm counting on you folks to post some really good, simple cooks that I can put into my cookbook while I'm confined.  Not necessarily tied to this thread, I'll be reading all of them, and looking forward to the day I can once again fire up a load of lump.
Thanks

Great to read the news on the replacement and recovery cycle. They can replace hips and knees these days faster than most folks can change their tires. Continue the recovery, you need anything let me know.

I've had both hips replaced, and am grateful every day for the gift of being able to walk again without pain.  It's amazing how well it all went.  I'm sure your recovery will be swift as well.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Remember to do what they tell you to do. More importantly, don't do what they tell you not to do. Take the time to get healed right.

Thanks to all for the encouraging words.  And Bentgrass , best wishes to you as well in your recovery.  I had my left knee replaced in 2013.  But it didn't go as well.  My knee surgeon's pain management protocol made no allowances for the previous injury to my pelvis and nerve damage in my left leg.  When the medication he sent me home with, ran out after about 5 days, it was deal with it, you'll be alright.  I ended up in the ER on a morphine drip. Needless to say, I went to a different surgeon for my hip.  A completely different approach to pain management.  I think the hip will be a much less painful recovery.
And keep those cook posts rolling.  I'm looking forward to getting some good ideas.

What are you doing for pain management? My left leg rebuild is excruciating. They don't make enough Tylenol or Motrin to even come close to touching it. I am going to my doctor tomorrow, I would like to ask.

They have me loaded up YukonRon.  I have been on Gabapentin for nerve damage since 2010, also Tramadol.  I came home with a script for an extended release Morphine pill, twice a day and a boatload of Percocet (5/325) I can take as needed.
I know this sounds like a lot, but I'm being really careful not to overuse the Percocet, I only take it when I feel the pain level starting to rise and even then I have only been taking one though I can take 2 every 4-6 hours as needed.  I have no intention of getting hooked on these things but neither am I going to let it get so bad I end up in an ER like I did with the knee.
This is for a previous injury, right?   I would ask about the Gabapentin and Tramadol.  That is what the UK Pain Intervention Clinic put me on after the steer shattered my pelvis and I was having pain issues even in my left foot.  It helped a lot, until my hip joint began deteriorating.  At that point, my surgeon also put me on Naprosyn (it's really just extra strength Alieve) an anti-inflammatory medication.  I didn't realize how much it was helping until I had to go off it for a week before surgery on my hip.
I feel for you my friend.  I know how active you like to be, and the damper that constant pain puts on your activities.  I don't like taking so many meds, but the pain can be overwhelming.  I hope this surgery is the final one I will have relating to my accident 6 years ago.  I am looking forward to the day I can hopefully toss all these medications and be normal again.
Best wishes to you on your doctor visit.  Hopefully they will find something to give you some relief.

I am way behind this year in miles for hiking and back packing. I am usually above 200 miles (about 10 miles per week) this time of year, and currently I have completed just 61 miles. needless to say, without the exercise, everything is off the grid physically. If I do not find a way to manage pain, I fear I will be on nothing but a pill diet to control all the things that have gone haywire, since my inability to get adequate exercise.

Again Tom, take care and get well soon. If there is anything I can do to help out, let me know. I appreciate the information you have shared.

YukonRon , I hear you on the weight issue.  I was constantly walking here on the farm and taking hikes along local creeks.  Loved getting out when I could.  Until that accident 6 years ago.  I was laid up for several months and when I got my appetite back, the pounds just kept coming.
I hate to admit it, but I have gained 100 pounds since that time. As soon as the pelvis began to get back to normal, my left knee gave out.  Arthroscopic surgery first and then total knee replacement.
And now total hip replacement. And all those extra pounds make it even worse.  I'm an old country boy that grew up on fried foods and all the stuff that  they now say you shouldn't eat but taste great and gave us the energy to work from daylight to dark.  I can't operate on steamed veggies and all that stuff.
I'm desperately hoping that this will be the end of the surgeries from that da$ned steer and I will once again be able to be active and enjoy the outdoors.  I do wish I had SGH's metabolism.  I am unable to comprehend how he can eat as much as he says and not weigh a ton.

Some folks are blessed with great DNA, and some folks are able to remain active to keep all potential health issues in check. I concur with you my friend, it is a battle.

Great report at checkup this morning.  Got a refill on Oxy this morning and also take X strength Tylenol, aspirin, Lyrica, naproxen.  Inuits taking it a day at a time but always expect too much, too soon !  Other than an Emergency appendectomy, this was my first experience in a hospital.  Lucky I guess for 61 years.   Since I started egging a year ago, I have been making dinner at least 5 nights a week and my wife can't wait to turn those duties back over to me.  Personally, one of my goals is to be able to navigate well enough to go with a buddy up to the Eggfest in Sterling/Rock Falls in June.   Best of luck in recovery  FarmerTom !  Weight issue is getting addressed at this time also.  Difficult watching portion control with all that great stuff that gets pulled off the Egg.

Focker, I'm very aware of the potential for addiction and am careful to use no more than needed to relieve the pain.  However, with my knee replacement, the Percocet I was given was going to run out over the weekend, only a week after coming home from the surgery.  I contacted my surgeon to get a refill to last a few more days.  He refused.  Said I would be fine after a very brief pain episode.  Monday morning, I was having such intense pain I had to call my wife to come home from her teaching job and take me to the ER.  I was put on morphine to control the pain.  The ER doc called my surgeon and explained my situation.  He still refused medication.
I had to see a pain intervention doc I had seen previously at the same medical complex as my surgeon to get the situation corrected.  He was appalled at my treatment, but stated my pain management was not his problem but my surgeons and would get this corrected immediately.  I had a refill from my surgeon waiting at my pharmacy before I left Lexington.  And then this a$$hole had the nerve at my final visit to suggest this was his plan all along.  It was all I could do to keep from smacking him in the face.  Due to my previous, very severe pelvic injury (the docs thought I wouldn't make it) my pain management needs didn't fit his pain protocol and he refused to make any adjustments.
I was careful to slowly reduce my usage until I no longer needed them.  I have no desire to be addicted to opiates, but I also understand the need to control pain when recovering.

@FarmerTom -  glad you are getting a long-standing issue sorted out and appreciate that you are recognizing the limits of your early recovery.  Gotta admit I skimmed several of the above posts but in the main, you will conquer this like all the other challenges and emerge victorious.

Thanks again to all you folks for the encouraging words.  And NPHuskerFL , that 6 million dollar man video isn't all that far from the truth.  Well at least the money part.  When my pelvis got shattered and I went into trauma in 2010, I spent most of 5 weeks in an intensive care trauma unit.  Thank God for health insurance.  My wife quit keeping up with the bills after it passed 1/2 million $$.
