Advice on Adjustable Rig

I do not have a platesetter, so I am looking going the Adjustable Rig route instead. I like the idea of having the flexibility of cooking at multiple levels and with multiple layers. Those of you with spiders, do you like it and use it? Round or oval plates? I think my cooking interest would be indirect boston butts, ribs, and brisket, but I think my kids would love to do some pizza too. What has worked best for you?

Love my AR. The factory grate is round so I went with the elongated grate and stone. Now I only break out the BFE plate setter for pizza.

Did you get the spider or just the oval stone?

  • I use the spider and SBGE cast iron for searing all the time. I also use the spider with SBGE pizza stone for 3 level cooking or doing multiple briskets or butts in one cook. I use the sear setup way more but I use the stone setup a couple times a year.

  • I have the R&B oval combo with extender and sliding grid in both LGBE's fwiw. I have one spider, small cast iron, small stone setup  that I use between the 2 eggs.

I also have the R&B combo with extender and oval sliding grids.  I don't cook pizza though. If i did I would probably get a couple of round stones for it. I do not use a spider.

On the R&B combo, what do you use as a drip pan?

I use the spider with a round stone all the time for heat deflection.  If I need oval deflection for ribs/brisket, I just rig it with foil and the drip pan.

The R&B combo comes with a metal oval ring. You wrap HD foil on the ring and it turns to an oval drip pan. You can the place on top of the oval stone or try to elevate it somehow if you want.

I also have the R&B combo with extender, sliding grids, oval stone and the oval frame I wrap with HD foil to make a drip pan. I also have the spider for steaks or if needed the round stone on the spider for heat deflection to add more room up top. I love it. It is definitely the way to go.

I make them out of foil most of the time. I also use the 9x13 foil pans from the store if I want to add water for any reason (rare).

BTW- I cook pizza all the time. all the AR setups work for that. And you will want to wok- probably the most fun cook on an egg. You 'll need a spider for that as well. You will use your spider for sure

I'm sold on getting the AR. I'm just on the fence about getting the Customer Combo or the R&B Oval Combo. I think regardless I'll need another stone for the pizza.

they are both fine. I use the RB Combo because I cook a lot of briskets and ribs. I cook a lot of butts, steaks, chops, chickens too and it works perfectly for everything. Like Cpark says- you will use your original grid most of the time so you will kind of have the best of both worlds with the RB Combo. A round grid and few ovals. You can't go wrong with either but I prefer the oval stones over the round. Grab a pizza stone and a wok from Tom when you order and you will be set for everything you could ever want to do an your egg.

When doing a multi-level cook is there issues with the upper deck dripping on to the lower one?
I wish i had known about cgs before i spent cash on platesetter and bge 3 tier cooking rack for lg and two level rack for xl, among other eggsessories

Spider with round stone has been one of best things to ever happen to bge.   I got this setup for the  large along with adj rig, two slide guides and two oval grids and two crossbars and added rig extender with round grid with one side sheared off up top.   For xl it is spider and round stone, adj rig, two slide guides, two crossbars, two oval grids and a round grid for the top.    I can do four levels of ribs this way as i elevate the entire setup with old broken platesetter pieces so i can pit ribs on the bottom level stock grill grate that the adj rig siys on top of

The oval stone is great as it deflects heat around longer items like racks of ribs or a brisket but i dont use oval that much.  I use spider and round stone in place of platesetter for indirect all the time

On added pleasant surprise with all of this is that when i am not using base grid. I can add smoking wood throughout the cook for a steady stream of smoke

Call Tom at CGS, he will help you get what you need but the flexibility of spider, round stone amd adj rig setups has expanded my use of the bge beyond imagination....

I have about $275 worth of AR, extender, oval stone, round stone, oval grid, sliders AND more! But I rarely use anything other than the AR. I suggest buying a couple pieces first and then decide what you will regularly use and buying that next.

I just ordered my R&B combo about 3 or 4 months ago and I didn't get the metal oval ring. I did see it offered separately. I just wrap the oval stone in foil and let it rock.

I wouldn't call it an "issue"... Just learn to work with it.

I will just drape foil loosely over the lower level if I am concerned about my drippings intermingling.

Sometimes you can work that to your advantage. Self Basting

Just call @tjv (Tom) and tell him what you cook, what you like and don't like and he will steer you to the right option. Great company and better guy

Now that I think about it, the foil ring may not have been included in the combo, but made sense to me at the time to get it. I also foil the stone as a back up.

It's not included and I have found it not necessary or even effective to use as a drip pan. I have one and haven't used it in over a year. It's messy, too shallow and really just not necessary. I just make a drip pan out of foil- you don't need an oval ring to do that. You can just do it with your hands in 30 seconds and then throw it out when done.
