pole beans vs. snap green beans
RRP
Posts: 26,465
I have already GOOGLED and can't find a good answer. Today I brought home 2 pounds of fresh "pole beans" from Kroger. Wifey immediately said "these aren't snapping right". So I GOOGLED and the up shot is I sliced and diced them all with a knife instead. I'm planning on a traditional comfort meal Sunday of Not Your Mother's Meat Loaf, green beans and small "new" potatoes. Will these pole beans work - or throw the meal off? TIA

Throw it all out. Turn back now.

@RRP Ron, I'm no bean expert, but snap beans and "pole" beans are the same thing to me. We use the name interchangeably for the same bean. But again, I'm by no means a bean expert.

Jeff, I thought we made peace the other day. Thanks for your joke though as that sort of was what Pat said - "these won't snap so they must be old". I instead took over and they are now cooking as we talk.Darby_Crenshaw said:Throw it all out. Turn back now.

The longer they are off the vine the more "rubbery" they get and the less "snappy" they are.

Musta said or done something at some point that was taken the wrong way. But i can't undo what's apparently been done.
Regardless. Enjoy the beans!

Naw - won't ever happen! Jeff and I used to be good cyber friends off this forum. We only seem to spar occasionally here and hopefully that has come to an end. The guy is SUPER talented - trust me!SGH said:Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -
Like i said. I thought we were at peace. Yer the one who said we weren't. It's up to you
@SGH. I have never needed any help. But when I do, i'll let you know.
I don't bother keeping track of grievances against me. And am always caught a little off guard when i find out someone has been keeping track of mine against them. Sometimes for years. Hahaha
I always cling to what fishlessman says. Up here, we don't mess with you unless we like you. About the nicest compliment i have heard in a while was from another yankee. He said "fvck off"
i said "back atcha" and we smiled, nodded, and drove away

I was just trolling my friend. Both of y'all are good folks in my book. Darby explained some book/binding stuff to me and you are the gasket master. I enjoy cutting up with both of y'all. I never did care for that Stike fellow thoughRRP said:

Where I live pole beans look like wide green beans or canned Italian beans. Snap beans are regular green beans. My wife loves pole beans and I prepare them southern style with onions and ham hock. They are excellent.Narcoossee, FL

I bet at least you aren't trying to figure out how to navigate through your town tomorrow when an expected 8,000 breast cancer survivors arrive here and can't navigate for sh*t how to get here let alone leave. Love 'em but why the hell can't some loved one drive them here and take them home? Say by 3:00 many locals stop any of them and "say, may I help you get back home?"

Thanks! We just finished our initial pre-cook for 3 hours with the beans, fresh garlic, onions,S & P plus the ever important 4 pieces of raw bacon cut into bits! Pole beans, Snap beans - or whatever I still sampled SEVERAL tonight - and I'm already looking forward to Sunday evening's Meat Loaf meal!NonaScott said:Where I live pole beans look like wide green beans or canned Italian beans. Ron, here is my understanding of the naming issue with beans.
Snap beans = string bean = green bean. There are lots of varieties. They are grouped into two groups based on growth habit of the plant - pole beans or bush beans. Of course there are local and regional variations in following the naming conventions. The snapping issue was most likely an issue of freshness, but possibility due to the variety.
It is interesting that your market labeled them as pole beans. Around here I only see them labeled as "green beans". Never making the distinction between pole beans or bush beans or any variety name. The pole/bush bean type and variety name are important to anyone growing them in their garden but seem to all get lumped into "green bean" for market purposes.Southeast Florida - LBGE
In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -

Haricot verts is one variety of snap bean that does seem to get labeled by its variety name in some locations.Botch said:Haricot verts or nothing.

I have never figured out the difference either, however the skinny ones are $1.00 at Publix this week and I bought 2#'s. Cut the tips at both ends, then cut into 1/1-1/2 inch pieces place in a pot with a steamer bottom, slice onions and some small pieces of bacon, about 4 slices cut into 1" pieces, steam covered until done. Either serve hot with butter s/p and balsamic vinegar or just eat cold with vinegar or your favorite salad dressing. Mine is poppy seed for this dish. Enjoy whatever you do.
Off to find the meatloaf with bacon weave lost in one of the freezers.
