Opinions on The $20 Bill Change

I honestly think Harriet Tubman would be offended that they are putting her picture on currency. Tubman was born into slavery where people were bought and sold for money. Tubman was also an abolitionist and therefore hated capitalism. So how do we decide to honor all the great things that she did? We put her face on a $20 bill.Aledo, Texas

I think a nice statue would have been better and probably cheaper. Since our currency is used around the world, I doubt that few people will recognize her for her contribution to a better world. But in reality, its just a piece of paper that represents a value of $20 for those who use it on a regular basis, not a lesson in history.

Andrew Jackson didn't believe in paper currency. Kinda funny ain't it?Toxarch said:I honestly think Harriet Tubman would be offended that they are putting her picture on currency. They aren't doing away with Jackson, they're moving him to the back.johnnyp said:Personally, I'd like to see more variety in our currency. There have been many deserving people from the 20th century that go unrepresented
Instead of doing away with Jackson, why not have 2 or 3 bills. Jackson, Tubman and....idk, Reagan.
throw in a bill (any denomination will do) for Edison, FDR and other American icons
I do agree with the sentiment that we could do with more variety in our currency. Currently US Grant on the $50 is the only person on any of the bills who was alive after the Civil War, and Tubman will be the first person on a bill who was alive in the 20th century. There still won't be anyone who was alive after women gained the right to vote.
I'd like to see a couple of denominations designated for Americans who made a contribution outside of politics. Maybe 4 of the 6 bills should be dedicated to politicians/founders, but expand to include more recent folks, and then the other 2 bills can include Americans who made contributions to science, art, or the culture of the United States. Edison, GW Carver, Audubon, George Eastman, James D. Watson, Jonas Salk, Clara Barton, Mark Twain, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, Robert Frost, Thoreau, Whitman, Walt Disney, Louis Arsmstong, Elvis, Dylan, etc. could all get their moment.LBGE

I'll bet at least a few who don't recognize her will go to Wikipedia and spend 5 minutes learning about her contributions.Spring Chicken said:I think a nice statue would have been better and probably cheaper. How many people around the world would look at our $20 bill and have any clue as to who Jackson was?Spring Chicken said:I think a nice statue would have been better and probably cheaper. Even with all the media coverage of late I'd bet most Americans couldn't tell you who is currently on the face of the $20 and who he was and what he did.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk -
I'm personally opposed to change. What's wrong with the 20 we had?

You mean the $20 with Grover Cleveland (who they took off to put Jackson on)?GregW said:I'm personally opposed to change. What's wrong with the 20 we had?

I don't care who's on the $20, but why does George Bush's mother, Barbara, get to be on the $1 bill?

What to they all have in common? Yes their pictures have all been printed on US currency at some point. The individuals pictured on our paper currency have been changing throughout our history. Switching out who is on our money is nothing new.Southeast Florida - LBGE
In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -
is it politically correct to put a black woman up front on the bill and make the white guy sit on the back. i dont understand why they would move him to the back anyways, kinda takes away from why they put her on the front
