OT- slicer question
looking for some advice- I want to get a slicer that can do bacon. Does anyone have one (that isn't a huge professional model) that has enough range of motion to slice a whole pork belly?

Even with a large 12" slicer you would been to fold a whole belly in half. I love my 10" slicer and it works with bacon very well. I get the belly very cold and fold in half to slice. Powers through it like butter and makes very even slices.Wolfpack said:looking for some advice- I want to get a slicer that can do bacon. I have a 10" Chefmate by globe. I paid $140 for it on craigslist and that was a steal. They are $800 new and it was in pretty good shape.
I bought a 12" slicer before I found this one and it was just way too big to have in my kitchen and weighed over 100lbs. It was a beast. Highly recommend a light duty commercial 10" like the one I have. It's a workhorse but easy to handle and store. This is the model I have.

You got my curiousity up. My Chef'sChoice has about a 10" stroke before the slicing table comes off the rails, and the bacon I have is 9" long (not that "center-cut" BS that Morrell et al are trying to push in the supermarkets now).
So, mine would work, but not a lot of room for error and probably a pain if you were cutting bacon in a large quantity. I would say look for something a bit bigger.“I'll have what she's having."

Have used a knife in the past but would like to be able to go a little thinner and I started 20 lbs today so don't want to hand slice that much.
@The Cen-Tex Smoker thanks- hadn't thought of folding in half. That solves some issues.

As long as you have it very cold- I go semi-frozen it will work perfectly fine.Wolfpack said:Have used a knife in the past but would like to be able to go a little thinner and I started 20 lbs today so don't want to hand slice that much.

Bacon is still plenty pliable when frozen/semi-frozen but it really helps it keep its shape through the slice. But that means you need a decent slicer to get through it When it's that firm.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

@Wolfpack If you go that route make sure you use a 20% coupon to save $86. Also if you have a discover card you can trade some rewards dollars for BB&B gift cards. They are $80 for a $100 gift card so it's like double dipping.

great idea. I did that with my blendtec. you can get a coupon any time by giving them an email address to spam you.Firemanyz said:@Wolfpack If you go that route make sure you use a 20% coupon to save $86. They mail them all the time and if you have an expired one they still take them also.

I do get them in the mail all the time but I was in between mailings when I wanted my blendtec. went to their website to see if I could download one and found the email trick. give them an email address and they will send you one on the spot...and then spam the bejesus out of you if you don't block it.Firemanyz said:They mail them all the time and if you have an expired one they still take them also.
