Question about cooking 2 butts?

Or more than one for that matter.

I have an XL and competing in a bbq comp this weekend and was wanting to cook at least 2 butts at same time which I have never tried. Say I cooked 2...will it take more time or should it be about the same timing? Thanks in advance.

No extra time for two or more butts as long as they are not touching. Don't expect them to finish at the same time though. Each cut of meat has mind of its own.

It's best if they are similar weight so they finish around the same time how ever I have had several cooks where one took 45 to 60 minutes longer than they other.

Even touching there is virtually no impact on time

obky issue may be with four or five butts jammed on. And not due to touching either, but because that much cold meat drags down the temp for a long time before the done temp recovers. But that's ok, because that heat is going into the meat.

When the temp drops after adding meat, the fire isn't cooler or smaller. It's just that more heat is going into the cold meat, versus the dome environment itself

I do two on the XL pretty regular these days, both are similar in mass, and the difference is negligible, just a few minutes if any.

I never do one butt anymore - always two or more.  Besides, it's nice to change something between the two in order to experiment.

It will take slightly longer due to the larger heat sink, but nothing substantial.  Add an hour to your cook time and you've got it covered.
