I like the pecan waffle at Waffle House.  There are no Waffle Houses in Michigan either.

We are going to Slippery Rock & should get there around 3.  After I get my toy, it's turn & burn back to Michigan.  After reading a number of opinions about the nastiness of scrapple, I'll pass.

I'm a bit surprised at the amount of people on here with usually excellent taste in food that default to crappy fast food when away from home.  That's one of the best opportunities to try new things and have new experiences.

No Waffle House or Chick Fil A and you've got crappy water? Time to move sir.
  • We never eat fast food at home, but when on the road we usually do lunch as take out and keep driving.  The only time we ever get to eat Chick-Fil-A.  Unfortunately the back half of our trips is usually on a Sunday.  I refuse to eat McDonalds or any other burger chain except Wataburger, and they are too messy for the car.  In a pinch we'll do Walmart chicken strips.  When I travel alone I hate to eat in a restaurant by myself.  If possible I'll get Olive Garden take out and go back to the hotel.  I always get hotels with a fridge in the room and my lunches are always hard salami on rye sandwiches with olives and pickles on the side.

I actually like scrapple, as long as I don't have to smell it being cooked.

I have zero problem eating in restaurant by myself.  I am excellent company.
I'd rather drink cheap booze and watch TV in my room than watch other people eat.

I eat lunch almost every workday alone, and always catch up on my Time magazine.  I'm a little less comfortable eating dinner solo, mainly because its darker and I can't read (maybe I should get a Kindle or something).
If I only ate out when I had a date, or friends, I'd miss out on a lot.   :|

I use a Kindle, mine is not back lighted but the case has a little reading light.  And that is exactly what I do too, if eating alone in a restaurant.  I tried playing my concertina, but it is hard to do that and hold a fork.  It seems to irritate the other customers as well.

When I travelled weekly as a consultant, I would find a local dive that would become "homebase" and I always ate at the bar, because, like others, I hate eating alone. I have met a lot of really interesting people over the years.  And "interesting"  has been both good and bad.

I had a knack for finding places that offered free appetizers and would have a big{ger} lunch and then this lighter fare for dinner.

and scrapple fried to death ain't that bad...

Scrapple is made from a filler (usually corn meal) and meat from the boiled remnants of a pig (head, feet, tail, sometimes organ meat) ground to mush, mixed with the filler and other stuff, formed, then sliced and fried.
