@lit - this is a prime example of where 2 stones are better than the PS and a stone.  I've got the woo and stones for my small and it's no problem to 650-700.

I think it depends on the small. If you search the history lots of people complain about their smalls. I could clean mine and put all fresh lump in and light in 3 places with no platesetter and come back 30 minutes later and it's at 400. Any of my other eggs would have wrapped the thermo after 15 minutes. I hated my small. You are right though 2 stones would have increased the air flow some.

I wonder what the differences are. My Small can go nuclear with no problem at all. Just wondering what causes some to not have decent airflow.

I've never had a problem going nuclear with my small. I use woo and stone as well.

@DMW not sure. My small was given to me it was my first egg probably 8 yrs ago or so. With the platesetter in I don't think I ever got it over 550 and even with the platesetter out it never got over 600. The bottom vent hole was really small in the ceramic it wasn't nearly as big as the draft door. Over the last 7-8 yrs on the forums I have seen arguments on both sides so it doesn't seem like it's an airflow issue they fixed recently.

The small is 80 lbs how do you strap that on your back by yourself? Sorry Ron has annoyed the crap out of me for a long time he posts useless crap day after day.
Pot calling the kettle black on that one.

Ron is very meticulous.  I do not doubt he is abe to carry it by himself if he says he can.
So squatting down and strapping 80 lbs on your back from behind is easier than carrying 70 lbs with handles in front of you? And did you call me black?
Who said squatting down and strapping 80 lbs on your back? I was pretty clear saying I could carry my small egg like a duffle bag using the Pot Lifter. Oh well - you hate me so much for some unknown reason this was a waste of time trying to explain what I said and what you incorrectly said I said.
Why not send me a PM so we can take this off this forum and tell me what it is that you hate me so much for. OK?

@RRP a duffle bag goes to one side right? Please explain how this goes to one side of my body and is easier to carry than something lighter with handles. Sorry but I don't think you thought this argument through.

LOL - once you get to my age you learn that carrying something heavy like a duffle bag and being able to keep your spine upright is far easier than carrying something in front of you which causes your torso to bend forward. Oh well, you won't believe me anyway.

I have carried my small holding the hinge in left hand and two right hand fingers in bottom vent, usually not very far just putting it in the nest and removing from nest. Once in nest it rolls very easily! I have also carried several MM at Eggfest and it's all I can do to lift from a table and I'm not strong enough to carry it very far as it put a real strain on my back. I agree that the small has some air flow issues but with a Kick Ash Basket none at all. RRP is a stand up guy that has some very good information to share on this forum and I just don't see the value in bashing anyone on here, very counter productive............

You are right you can't teach common sense. Have you ever tried to carry an 80lb small egg? It's 15" wide so to keep it off your body you have to keep it at a minimum 8" out off your side so I'm sure you know that takes a lot more strength than carrying a duffle bag with a straight arm. I am 200lbs and work out 5 days a week and couldn't carry an egg 1 handed out to my side very far. That's why I didn't even consider this as an option how is that easier than a fixed stand with 2 handles? I'm a senior engineer at my company and I agree there are a lot of not so smart engineers running around that don't really think things through they just talk to hear their smart words with no actual experience.

As one who has had a Mini Max for a long time I highly recommend NOT buying a platesetter. Go with a Ceramic Stone and Mini Max Woo

I cook pizzas in all my eggs which means I either need 2 stones or a platesetter and a stone. Not sure why I would want 2 stones so I get platesetter a for all my eggs. Do you not cook pizzas? I have never understood this advice.
Let's start with the fact you only need one stone to cook pizza. Tom @ Ceramic Grill Store got me on to this and works fine. If I am doing lots of pizzas I will use two stones.
i have cooked just one pizza with no stones by cooking very high up.
And Lit I cook pizzas in all my Eggs.

I have a MiniMax. I use a plate setter, I have no issues on either reaching or maintaining any desired temp. Longest cook was over 14 hours, and still had lump in the KAB. I love this cooker.
Although heavy, I do carry it. Albeit not far, I have no issues. I carry coolers too, weighing more. I am old, but I am of working stock, so I can handle it.

I like that: working stock. Unfortunately I was a car pimp and now can't move crap. The MM stays on the porch and I can still haul the Mini to the truck by myself. Same reason I only got the Yeti 45 and Roadie, too damn heavy with anything in them for me to move. Wish I had spent more time developing "working stock" :o.
Hell, at 68 my 72 pound poodle is getting to be a problem when she doesn't want to jump in the car.

Pretty strong for a Weds AM.  And all over a question about buying the MM.  If this trend continues the evening will definitely be top-quality entertainment.

  • Sorry for the double post and forum fumbling in regards to quoting lousubcap (I'll try and add to the entertainment):
I am looking for a good price on the MM also after discovering that the fire ring and conveggtor have recently been reworked (thankfully) just before I pulled the trigger at but $50 off list with the platesetter included.

Who is moving these obsolete units on the shelf at a deep discount..will present owners ever receive both replacement parts at a discount..are the new units shipping now/when did they start..and who has a picture of the new parts installed and/or links to a separate discussion as to why this is indeed 'improved' Egg engineering (or not) moving forward?

I never said I can't lift 80lbs I used to take my small camping all the time. Carrying it with one arm out to my side seems to be about the worst solution possible. It also sounds horrible for my back versus using a fixed carrier with 2 handles where you can straighten your back and carry it in front of you. I was trying to help the OP Rons solution of 1 person carrying a small around it that pot lifter isn't going to work for most of the people on here.

@Eggzellent I heard that the cost of a MiniMax is $450 for average dealers. I paid $500 for mine. I also heard that they did some adjustments to the firebox on the newer version. Not sure there would be much difference!?!?

Should you buy one? Heck yeah you should, it's not even a valid question when it comes to BGE!
