DigiQ DX2-Is it really worth it

Would love to hear everyone's opinion on The BBQ Guru DigiQ DX2.  I have considered purchasing one for a while now but could never talk myself into biting the bullet.  Is this product something that is well worth the money?  Does it save that much time and hassle or is this just another piece of over-priced equipment that Big Green Egg pushes?

You bought the egg because they control and hold temps so well. I don't think it's needed, but I do want one lol....I think they are nice for cold areas. I don't want to go outside at 3 am when it's 0 outside to slightly adjust my vents

That was exactly my point when considering it.  I too still want one though.

First of all, I'm not sure, but I think it can be had from the mfg for a lower price. Worth looking anyway.

It doesn't save time at all. It does do a great job of controlling the temp of the egg so that you can set it and forget it. Get a good night's sleep instead of babysitting the egg.

Some folks like turbo cooking where they put the food on in the morning, at 350° instead of the usual low and slow 250°. That way, they can finish the cook in time for dinner and don't have to worry about the fire dying while they sleep. They are awake and can check on it periodically just to make sure.

I have a DX2 and it works great. Haven't lost a cook yet. I use it only for lo n slo cooks and I do far fewer of those than I used to. If I knew that then, I wouldn't have bought it.

Some folks use it for shorter, hotter cooks. To me, the egg does a fine job of holding any temp for the short duration of most cooks so it's not worth hooking up the guru for anything other than a lo n slo.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

  • Caroliona Q.  I'm sure they do a great job but unless you are constantly doing low and slow cooks it's kind of a waste of money

  • I love mine, but I'm a bit neurotic when it comes to monitoring the egg. I'm fine using just the vents when it's a daytime low-and-slow because I can periodically check the temp. For overnight cooks the peace of mind is well worth it in my book.

So, you just answered your own question. =)

That was my point. I did them much more frequently when I bought the guru. These days, not so many.

You could always try the TipTopTemp for $30. Seems to get pretty good reviews from the few I've read. No batteries, no power cord. Just be sure to cover it if it's going to rain. It's basically an automotive type thermostat and cold rainwater causes it to change it's setting.

  • I have one and it works as advertised, but I bought a maverick and its alarm is enough to give me peace of mind while sleeping at night.  If I had bought the maverick first I never would have bought the guru

a controller takes a simple device and makes it more complicated.  now you've got probes that can malfunction, wifi issues, what happens if someone cuts power in the middle of a cook, etc.

i got the flameboss in december, and i love it.  it works like a champ.  but i like gadgets.  anything that can be done, can be done better with wifi.

    Do you need it? Nope.

Is it worth it? From BBQGuru's perspective, figuring research, manufacturing, and support, it's a decent value. From the customer's perspective, the BGE (and all other smokers and grills) work whether or not a DigiQ is attached, but peace of mind has value.

I've hooked mine up and slept soundly for 8 hours while it minded the Egg. I've hooked it up and spent the day shopping for groceries and garden supplies while it minded the Egg.

$300 divided by however many times you think you will use it. I'm up to about a dozen, so I'm down to $25 per cook, which is still NOT a value. I think it hits value at around $3 per cook. So, 75 to 100 uses breaks even, for me. Figure out the value for you. Also, if it saves a $200 SRF Kobe Gold brisket from disaster you might want to figure that in: $200, multiplied by the chances that it would go sideways without the controller. If you figure the chance of that as 10%, then the value of the DigiQ for that cook is $20. 15 of those and it's worth it.

I first bought the Maverick ... then bought the Guru.  Used both of them at the same time.  The Guru controlled the overnight temps and the Maverick was there to wake me up if something went wrong. Could have used a baby monitor next to the Guru, but already had the Maverick.

Bought the Flame Boss 200 last summer.  Used it with the Maverick until Flame Boss added a pit temp alarm that sends a text when the limits are exceeded.  Now I have the Flame Boss text number matched with a loud and long County ring tone on my android ... cannot sleep through that.  The Guru hasn't been used since last summer and the Maverick hasn't been used since late last fall.

Use the Ru all of the time for roasting and overnights. Never lost a cook, always performed as expected, and I do sleep very well with it. Worth the money to me.
