I've got both and my experience with them has shown no significant difference in speed.
Also have a couple of the Lavatool Javelins and find no significant difference between them and the Javelin Pro and Thermapen. Hard to beat the smaller Javelins for only $25.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk -
This is good news for us that are on a budget. Do the lavatools hold up over time?

How about a durability and customer service test? Thermoworks is hard to beat for service.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

The Thermapen is a bit faster, a bit more accurate, has a slightly larger operating range, more waterproof. The Javelin Pro is a lot cheaper ($58 vs $99). The Thermapen is made in England, the Javelin in China. If you need to contact Thermoworks, they have phones, emails, and a real address - Lavatools has an email. Thermoworks has been around for a number of years and has a good customer service reputation - Lavatools seems to be pretty new so long term service is yet to be determined.
When I got my Thermapen eight years ago, I don't remember Lavatools being around. My Thermapen gets daily use. It is still going strong - I sometimes wish it would break so I could get the new MK4 version.Southeast Florida - LBGE
In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -
Just ordered the javelin pro on Amazon for 54.99 on Amazon. Will try to keep evryone updated on performance

Just an FYI, the Classic Thermapen is now $79 regular non-sale pricing.jtcBoynton said:The Thermapen is a bit faster, a bit more accurate, has a slightly larger operating range, more waterproof. I was actually excited when I thought I had "lost" my Thermapen, because it meant I could buy the new mk4. Then I found it and was bummed. Then I bought the mk4 anyways
(I'm fat and lazy and was getting tired of trooping back inside when I forgot the Thermapen)

My Thermapen is slow as hell. I sorta noticed it...then @DMW AKA Dwayne was using it at brisket camp and he said it was slow.... Maybe I need to replace the battery....still on the original.

My oldest Thermapen also started to seem sluggish a couple of years ago so I replaced that stupid little oddball 12v battery.nolaegghead said:My Thermapen is slow as hell. It seemed like it might have been a bit snappier, hard to say, but it did fix a problem I also was having with it not always wanting to turn on when pivoting the probe out.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk -
Once I get it warmed up, it isn't so bad....but that initial reading...3 seconds it is not even close. More like 10.
