we just always called them pork pies
the tourtiere version is french canadian and uses clove, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg as the spice. family holidays the women set out 20 kinds of food on the table and the men just grab the pork pie and cover it with ketchup bypassing the rest of the table

i probably avoided the pork pies for maybe five years. at my now-wife's family Christmas eve party, all the men were telling me to "stay in here (kitchen) and have some pork pie". (you'd know the area, fishless, was in a three family in lawrence, french canadian families, on haverhill street, near the spring)
like a chump, i declined ("meat in a pie?") and instead hung out in the livingroom with my girlfriend and the kids.
when we got married, i finally figured it out, and hung out with the uncles and fathers eating the pies as they came out of the oven.
five years i missed out on those things. ...five years

A few years back when I was working in Prarie States, Illinois there was a little old time meat market just up the road called Wallers. They made a meat pie every Wednesday that was just insane. Sure wish I had that recipe.fishlessman said:we just always called them pork piesLocation- Just "this side" of Biloxi, Ms.

i stared eating them in a three tenement just cross the river from there, near the boat ramp
visited a friend around the corner on west street off haverhill a few weeks ago, that area has really changed, has to be one of the last french canadians left there. put shredded chopped carrots in the pork simmer this time, was really a good improvement

Thanks for the post. I too had to look it up also. This will definitely be something I will try in the very near future.
