You posted about how to keep adult beverages cold on a Saturday night following a holiday when everyone reading this post is most certainly enjoying an adult beverage. I am not surprised this is headed where it is. Saturday is the new Friday.RRP said:Geeeeez - at this point I think my PSA effort is melting away shall we say?

One giant ice cube will melt into as much water as smaller ice cubes per say. Where the real difference is that smaller cubes will melt faster due to the total surface area. They will keep the drink colder. The key is to use smaller ice cubes and drink faster. The bigger the ice cubes in relation to the volume of ice the less they cool.
-
Mikee's right. @Jeepster47 you need to fire up the temp probes again and run some 'speriments to prove me wrong, but the smaller chunks of ice have more surface area and melt faster because they are cooling the drink faster. @NPHuskerFL 's new, bigger balls melt more slowly, but they're cooling the drink more slowly as well. Gotta weigh the ice to be sure you're using the same amount of ice.THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

Leave Blake's balls out of this!

What does Blake's balls have to do with ice?

I can't get my head around this without knowing the temp of the liquid when it is poured into the glass and the desired temp of said liquid. If it is kept at room temperature then a bunch of small cubes will cool it faster. But colder, more diluted whiskey may not be the goal here. RRP seems to be shooting for cool (for a long time) and minimally diluted such that the one large cube serves him well.
And first world problems are still, well, you know, problems.

I got one of these for Christmas from my son who's a bar manager in Orlando. He said take distilled water, heat it just to boiling, let it cool down and then pour it in the mold. What you'll get is a crystal clear cube the way he does it in his bar. It's the air in the water that clouds the ice. I did about 1/2 gallon and put the rest in the fridge for future use. He also sent me a bottle of his signature old fashion and the clear cube is pretty cool, pun intended.Lenoir City, TN - Bama fan in Tenn Vol's backyard.

@Legume ... Based on your comment, I must not have been clear enough in my statement. I'm firmly in the camp of bigger is better for long range cooling. As several have said, more mass per surface area yields longer life. My point was, if you accept that as a fact, then you should accept that smoke wood chunks last longer than chips. Yes?Legume said:Mikee's right. Haha - are you trying to sucker me into the wood chunk/chip discussion where O2 and placement play a part - more variables?
Bigger ice = slower melt (slower cooling) I'll totally agree with. FWIW, I didn't disagree with you, you were totally clear. I was just referring back to your earlier temp logging experiments - seeking quanitative evidence over ice cube pics - if we really want to do this right.THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER -
If you use straws these big cubes suck.

Close enough to my original topic, Mick! Airline approved, huh? For carry on and overhead storage I'm sure...Mickey said:I really think this thread is lost. Here is a pic of my Christmas Glock 43 in its airline approved travel box. I have forgot what the hell this thread was anyway.

I use the yeti rambler whiskey cup and a 3" sphere ice mold and i get 4-5 good whiskey drinks and the melt off is just right. Not watered down and not straight. i like mine with just a bit of water and the rate of melt is perfect for that .Memphis TN - Large Green Egg
