Got my new medium Kick Ash Basket today!

I'm using my business partners medium egg for the winter and it did not have a Kick Ash Basket so I ordered one Tuesday and it arrived today just in time for Thanksgiving Turkey cook. The folks at KAB company are just awesome. 
I will be shaking my ash! Thanks Chad................

Don't kill me for this question, but what is the basket used for? Does it just make it easier to clean out the egg? Or do you remove the stock grate in bottom also?
i want to buy one, and my local store carries them, but I am curious about the benefits -
