Just joined the KAB club.

Ordered a KAB for my large today. Hope it arrives by Friday so I can try it out this weekend.

Sounds good, just ordered mine today as well. Looking forward to trying it without the lower grate.

#1 thing I love about my KAB is that I don't go thru lump as fast as I used to. Life before KAB was emptying out ALL the lump and throwing most of it away.

Today, I just give the KAB a good shake and I'm good to go ...

I'm a recent convert as well. Thanks to @Jeepster46 I also went with a 10 gallon garbage pail as the KAB fits down inside for no shake down mess!

I haven't purchased a lot of accessories but did pick up a KAB this past summer from Kimps Ace Hardware in Green Bay WI.  Its made well and works well.     FWIW, If you live near Green Bay and haven't checked out Kimps, put it on your list. Great sales people and just about everything made for your BGE.

  • KAB is high on my list of recommended items that you must get when buying an egg.  My wife bought me one for my birthday. I would buy another one tomorrow without hesitation if something happens to the one I have.

Thanks @DMW.  Ordered it.  I had signed on here as being down for one, expected some kind of notice when it was available.

I have to clean the small after every cook, so I am really looking forward to this!

I also have an XL, but it is real easy to clean, so I see no need for a KAB for it.

LOL - now I really find that as funny! I love my small and find it easy to stir, add new and get rip roaring hot! So I have no interest in buying a KAB for it. But you, OTOH find your XL to be easy and no need for a KAB. I'm still getting accustomed to my KAB in my large, but I guess I don't follow why you don't want one for your XL.

The clean out hole on the XL is MUCH larger, and the space outside the firebox is negligible - does not need cleaned.  The factory fire grate in the XL is also huge, I can lift it out lump and all and clean with a whisk broom and dustpan (I only do this when the lump is mostly consumed).   Easy-peasy.

I too love my small, but the small is a whole different story. Clean out hole is small.  I have the HiQ fire grate, and it often dislodges when I am stirring used lump, requiring me to remove everything.  The fire box is such a small diameter, that the ashes from a single cook are deep enough to affect air flow.  I clean it after every cook, and consider it a PITA.

That leads me to the question as to why the firebox on the small is so small?  There is room for it to be at least 3" larger in diameter.  It would hold more lump, the fire grate could be larger and better supported, air flow would be greater, thus it could cook longer or even hotter.  The air/cleanout hole could also be larger so you could fit a skinny shop vac wand in there - you can't.
