I stumbled upon orange as a great smoke wood for chicken on the egg ... good wood for pork too, but great wood for chicken. Unfortunately citrus trees don't grow in the middle of Illinois ... lots of oak, pecan and wild cherry, so all is not lost. While in Arizona on vacation, I found an orange farmer who was more than willing to share some of his rather large pile of orange wood. Grabbed a half dozen logs and went away with a rather large smile. Today we struck out for home. The logs were boxed and stored inside the Jeep. Hmmm ... didn't think it through completely, and so, have been smelling rather aromatic orange trees for five hundred miles. For the first few miles it smelled rather good ... for the last few miles it was a little overpowering.
Looks like there will be some repackaging and repacking before we continue on our trip tomorrow. Three more days of that level of citrus smell would probably result in a mutiny on the part of the missus.

Maybe a differnt "flavor" for those car freshner trees, I'm getting sick of pine....orange sounds kinda nice, after a full day in the car maybe not so much, but for a gew hours sounds like it was OK.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

I know a guy who filled his pick-up bed with firewood, drove from MN to California, and was told his firewood was not allowed into Cali. Doh.

Nice score on the wood. No orange trees in Toronto.

If the wood is green and you bag it, I would recommend airing it out every 2 days (at least) more if possible. Just open the bags let them breathe for a bit.. Funky things like to grow in moist environments with no air movement.
Nice score!

^^this - don't let mold and fungus grow or it'll make your food taste terrible at best or make you sick.

Thanks for the reminder. A couple of logs are green to use in the spring ... will season them in the garage. The rest are already seasoned - probably not that odorous - so will store them in the basement near the eggs.
The great score is that the owner told me to come back for more. He suggested trying some lime wood. Said it really smells good when they burn it. Said I could trim some right off the tree ... will have a tree saw along when we return in the spring ... want to try some now.

Stack that stuff with air gaps between the logs in the open where the sun shines and you're golden.

You assume that the sun shines in Illinois during the winter months.nolaegghead said:Stack that stuff with air gaps between the logs in the open where the sun shines and you're golden.

At least he didn't tell to stick it where the sun don't shine.

He would have had to stand in line ... the missus was seriously thinking about it on the first day of our trip.theyolksonyou said:At least he didn't tell to stick it where the sun don't shine.
