If you fry on your egg, make sure you don't have a handle sticking out or a misalignment of the vessel where when you close the lid in an adrenaline charged panic as flames shoot out and burn off your arm hair you don't tip or flip the vessel with the hot oil into the fire and all over the place and create a fireball.

If you are one to panic, or you're drunk or high as a kite, or you throw your breaks on your motorcycle because you see a flashing blue light, just make sure you can slam that lid down and nothing is going to tip over.

I cook on a wood deck.  No way I'm going to fry on my egg when I have 10 different cooking options to control the temp and fry, and not spend all that effort loading, lighting and trying to regulate a lump fire when it doesn't improve the quality of the cook (degrades it if anything).

Get a clip on thermometer, get a propane burner, regulate the oil temp with a regulator....you can jack up the fire when the temp drops when you add your food.  You can lower it when you reach your oil setpoint.  Fire instantly responds to a twist on a regulator.  Just seems plain idiotic to try to this on an egg.  Everyone on this forum can afford a $20 propane burner and a tank of propane.

So sorry if I'm a ****, but all this wok and frying on a smoker/grill just makes me shake my head. Hey, lets cut prosciutto with our table saw.
you can fry an empanada in a wok with a cup and a half of oil, it would take a gallon and a half in my fry pot =)   you are right about an egg and frying, especially on a wood deck, but then you shouldnt be lighting an egg on a wooden deck anyways  ;)

You can boil water on an Egg and cook pasta. Does that make it the best option? Best tool for the job type situation.

We used this setup at Eggtoberfest. It's a spider and wok from CGS. The ring in the spider worked perfectly for holding the round bottom wok.

Craig, I saw this.  How did you regulate the oil temp so that it didn't reach its flash point.

If I'm frying that's the set-up I'd use.   The one thing that stops me from frying in ceramics is no real way to control the oil temperature.  It's not like on the stove where we can regulate the heat source quickly by turning a knob.

an induction burner and a CI Dutch oven work great for deep frying with no open flames.
Dont skip past this↑↑.  Short of buying a commercial deep fryer,  @SmokeyPitt nailed it.

No mess, easy temp control, and no fire risk.

I used a Thermoworks Infrared thermometer and a Chef Alarm with the included pot clip that holds the probe down in the oil to keep an eye on the oil temp. Make sure your Egg temp is holding steady. Deep frying small things only takes a couple minutes so open the dome, fry and pull them and shut the dome. We did find that the spider in the legs up position works best.

Mitigate your risk and use CI as mentioned. Not to mention, you will have a lid to put on if things get dicey and flare up and you don't have the feeble-wobble rounded bottom of a wok. Less oil- same result- less risk

I fry all the time with a wok in my egg. Put wok and oil in, close lid and get to temp I want.

    Open and fry.

Y'all fry stuff on your eggs to your hearts' content.  Makes for some interesting threads.

To reiterate my point, is it dangerous?, sure, a bit, but all frying is.  Is it a completely idiotic way to fry stuff given all the expense, work and limitations controlling temperature, plus burning expensive lump and reaping no benefit?  Yes, it is all that.  So carry on.

Rockwood gives me a very neutral frying flavor.

You could burn dry cow sh*t and it would be neutral.  Good observation.
