I know you say you have other CI you can use.  We have two enamel Lodge dutch ovens (different sizes) that my wife is fond of, so to keep the peace I took a fellow forum member's tip (maybe @DoubleEgger if I remember correctly) and purchased the following Lodge setup that I use solely for outdoor cooking:

I just ordered the oven in your post.  Thanks for the "suggestion and motivation"!

  • I think when they say "not for use on a grill" they mean not for use with high direct heat. 350 degrees of indirect heat on the egg is no problem.

I do have a question about the lodge double Dutch Oven In the above post though.  The directions say not to cook" acidic foods in it, i.e. Beans" until it is HEAVILY seasoned due to the acid taking the seasoning off and sticking and discoloring the cast iron...

Well, beans and chile are exactly why I want to cook in it so how concerned should I be with this issue?  What precautions should I take?

I seasoned my other lodge skillet in the oven after purchase and have had no sticking issues.....but I haven't cooked beans.

I was searching Dutch ovens this morning and found this exact same dual purpose one, seems perfect. Is the $35 about right? I've never really bought CI before.

Edit: I see it's the lowest it's been since June of 2014 when it was $30 (also the lowest it's been), guess it's a good price

I have been using my Staub for a while now.  I chose grey on purpose to avoid stains.  I like it.  I don't see why the Lodge would not work.

The main issue I have with Lodge Enameled Cast Iron is it is made in China.

And the point?   Your egg is made in Mexico, your phone is made in China, etc.
I have a problem with Chinese goods. Particularity when I'm going to cook food that I'm planning to eat. I can only imagine the steel that gets melted down for use in Chinese cookware. I have always had a fear of radioactive medical metals being melted down and reused.

    A ridiculous fear probably.

I still avoid anything made in China that can come in contact with my food.
So I guess you're not a big fan of Yeti drinkware either.
    No.......not a Yeti fan

Lol, i think you have it mixed up Greg.   Japan is the one poisoning us with radioactive stuff.   China is the one poisoning us with lead and cadmium  ;)
You do have a good point.

Yup. That's the one. I used the lid last night to cook bacon and mushrooms for my stuffed tenderloin. Can't beat it for the price.

Re: I picked up this 8 qt Staub for $99 the other day at woot.  It will be used at brisket camp for something yet to be determined.

Are you planning to use this in a Large BGE?

I'm trying to get the largest one that can fit in a Large BGE.

@nolan8v I never even thought to consider if it would fit.  I'll check and let you know.   I'm not a big fan of dutch ovens on the egg.  The stove or oven work just fine for me, and if I want some smoke, I'll smoke some ingredients - onions, meat, etc.

@nolan8v   I just put it in my large - it fits with room to spare.  I tried my medium, fits but top doesn't close all the way.
