@nolaegghead it's an old Jeepster not sure of the year but it was pretty neat.  Given his screenname here I thought he might like it.

Oh yes, I like it ... it's even in our "fleet" color.  Looks like someone really loves it.  That's the best looking one I've seen ... really grabs you.  Thanks for posting it.

I had a what the heck moment until I walked up and saw the Jeepster logo.   Couldn't find the owner to get more details.  It was pretty clean though.

I'm not familiar with them.  I like the weirdness. And I'm usually knowledgeable on my cars.  Did they make them in '47?  I think so!

I did a bit of research looks like 48-50.  50 had a v grill.  So this is 48 or 49.  From what I picked up these were rear wheel drive so not as popular as other Willeys offerings. It was odd and neat I've never seen one before.

They were made in 1948, '49 and '50.  Since they were only two-wheel drive and relatively expensive compared to other vehicles of that time frame, they never really caught on.  Not sure about the number manufactured (various sources list different numbers), but certainly less than about 70,000 for the three model years.  A really rare one will have a six-cylinder engine ... most had a 63hp four-cyclinder engine.  And all will have inadequate brakes.

I've seen about six of them over the last thirteen years. Started using the Jeepster handle in 2002, so started paying attention to them then.  A friend of mine, that I met about six years ago, had one of the six-cylinder Jeepsters, but he sold it.  Now he's working on spiffing up this 1954 CJ3 (he names all of his vehicles - this one is called spud 'cuz he bought it from a guy in Idaho) ...

That is interesting.  It looks like this was the original "crossover" vehicle that combined elements from an offroad and street vehicle.  It looks like a Rolls Royce and and old truck had a baby.

I always liked the Jeepster's.  Had a model of one as a kid and always wanted one, but they are hard to find and if you do they aren't as nice as the one above.

@nolaegghead ... yep, the Jeepster concept car is neat, but is a far step from it's basic beginnings.

I e-mailed U_Tarded's picture to my friend who owned the Jeepster.  Here is his reply:

They are fun, but a **** to keep running, hard to drive, uncomfortable, and quirky.  I was happy to have sold mine.

Think that about sums up why so few were manufactured.  Maybe that's also why so many of the remaining vehicles have been heavily modified.

If it's leaking oil, park it in front of your a-hole neighbor.

Hey my Jeep doesn't leak anything...unless you count water leaking into the interior if it rains hard.  It is funny that in 2015 they still can't figure out how to make a top that doesn't leak.

In all fairness it is easy to make a top that doesn't leak if it doesn't come off ;).

But what is the fun in that.  The old jeeps used to come with drain holes, because they new they were going to get wet.  Like this.  =)

Still had them up past 2004 as I had an '04 Rubicon. So I guess the whole line of TJs did, not sure about these newer Jeeps. You only forget to replace the drain plugs once after you take a hose and spray down the whole thing. Next times it rains, and you are in nice clothes.... :(

    Good one @SmokeyPitt   =)

You're absolutely right.....a quoted the leaky top but was referring to the leaky motor.  And for the record - I've had an old '86 leaking in my garage up until a few years back.  I love the Jeep as long as I'm staying local......it's a lot of fun.  FJ is as much fun as you can have with your top on - and dependable!

They still have the drain plugs in the new jeeps (JK).  I keep mine out most of the time and I pulled out the carpet and just use rubber mats.  I have been caught in the rain topless and doorless a few times.  It doesn't bother me when I choose to get wet :)...but when I have the top on and it leaks it bothers me.
