Laredo lump?

Anyone ever heard of Laredo lump? I just got the May flyer from Restaurant Store and they have it on sale for $8.99 for a 20lb bag. Nothing on Naked Whiz's lump site, so not sure if it is relabeled something else or what.

I'll probably pick up a bag and give it a try. If it sucks I can always burn it in my fire pit.

Saw that yesterday as well when I was checking out their specials. I was wondering the same thing.
Maybe I'll get a bag to try as well. If you get one before I do post up a report. I'll do one if I get it before you.

  • Laredo Premium Charcoal is terrible - save your money!

I bought 2 bags - but I can't remember from where (probably Home Depot) and straight away when I fired up the egg I knew I was in trouble.

It smells like chemicals when burning, so much so that it effect the flavor of the food. I had to toss a cook just because of the lump. I've never smelled something so terrible when burning lump before.

The only thing I will use this for in the future would be for clean burns - but if anyone wants the spare bag I have to try on their own, let me know.

I was going to try a bag as well. Now after reading @HoustonEgger review, it looks like money wasted.

I hate how they use the words 'natural' and 'premium' for such a bad product.

All lump is 'premium'. I never heard any company advertising that they were  second best.

    Anyone else have a review?

The ones that make me roll my eyes are are "organic" and "restaurant grade".

No regulation on the word "organic" if you're not eating it or applying it to your body.....so no accountability whatsoever.  Either way, if you have to use tag word, of course it's organic!  It's a tree that grew in the wild that was reduced to carbon.  It's also heart healthy, no HFCS, cage free, dolphin friendly, BPA & GHP free, and non-conflict lump charcoal.  Should we put that on the bag too??  Don't tell PETA, but we DO test our charcoal on animals.  :fearful: hahahaha

Next "restaurant grade".  No offense to restaurants, but that's a step DOWN in quality in my opinion.  You don't see very many restaurants using charcoal at all, but most of the ones that contact us want the cheapest crap briquettes that will burn.  They are there to make money, and most of their customers will never know the difference.  Most of the BBQ restaurants use gas and wood from what I've seen though.

As long as no genetically modified trees were used for the charcoal, I'm good...

I bought a bag of Laredo along with 2 bags of Royal Oak while at the Restaurant Store last fall. The two bags of RO were so bad from them I emailed RO. In hindsight it was more likely the Restaurant Store's issue for the crushed lump. The Laredo lump was fine. After opening the bag it was dry. It was all charcoal lump and the bag was not filled with 25% of water. Based on that one bag of Laredo, I would be inclined to try it again.
