Is the cast iron coal grate a new change

Throughout my readings here I have seen numerous reports of the ceramic fire box coal grate cracking.  The grates in both of my new eggs are cast iron with many small holes.  Is this a new change by BGE to combat the instance of warranty costs associated with the ceramic ones?

Does anyone have any experience with these new CI grates and does it change the mechanics of working with the grill and temp control any appreciable amount?

Thanks

  • I believe they have always been (at least as long as I can remember) made of cast iron.

@BigGreenBamaGriller , thanks.  BTW I answered your questions about my table design in the other thread.

The new addition I see is the "how to install" direction from BGE.  Sometimes the obvious just isn't I guess.

Years ago they were made of ceramic instead of cast iron. Not sure what year that they made the change to cast iron.

Thanks guys. Maybe I have just been reading too much and confused some of the facts/terms.  Probably just need to get off the computer, go fire the dang things up, and learn on my own to some degree.

But there is absolutely a wealth of experience and information here, I would be a fool not to take advantage of your sharing and posting.

Both my large and small purchased in 2000 still had these. Shortly thereafter folks first replaced them with Lodge brand cast iron trivets and then floor drain covers. My guess was BGE got the drift about '03 or '04.

Yes the ceramic ones would crack on occasion. The new cast iron grate for my large has the same size holes as the old ceramic grate, but has twice as many. Air flow problems should not be as common as using the ceramic grates. Temp control is not any different just easier to get more air through and less problems from blocked grate holes.
