You can use it either way!
Be advised though, that you have a 90 day return policy...after that there is no stated warranty on the product!I spent most of my money on good bourbon, and bad women...the rest, I just wasted!! -
1st cook using it tonight. Dealer said without the original grate. We shall see.
Thanks -

Works either way. I leave the original grate when I'm using smaller chunks of charcoal.LBGE | DigiQ | SW Cap | KAB | iGrill2 | CI PS | PSWoo2 | HQ Grid | Extender

I don't have one, but I thought the purpose of the KAB was to increase airflow in addition to easy ash removal. I think using it with the fire grate wouldn't allow maximum airflow. Idk thoughSteven

That's what Gary said at Roswell Hardware.

@Lowflyer , where did you get the cast iron grate for your Mini Max? I wouldn't mind picking one up for mine.

On my first cook with the KAB on my large I had a very hard time getting the lump lit and getting the fire to stay lit. I soon realized it was an airflow issue and not an issue with reusing lump since when I used a wiggle rod through the vent to poke through the grate, the fire did well in that spot. Maybe the combo of grate and KAB was too much. Will remove grate and see what happens tonight. Two Large Eggs, 6 gal Cajun Fryer, and a MiniMax in Charlotte, NC - My New Table

I use my KAB with the fire grate and can tell it has better air flow with me having to close the lower vent less for different settings. I feel that I would burn too much lump without the grate"The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

I used KAB without the grate and it came up to temp QUICK. Impressed here, hope the welds hold up.
