Did I screw up using used lump?
TigerTony
Posts: 1,078
Got my egg ready to do a over-night pork butt. Went to clean the egg out and add new lump.
I removed the old lump (RW), then vacuum the ash then put new lump (RW). Then for some reason I decided to put the used lump back on top. Now I have two thirds fresh lump and one third used lump in the egg along with two handfuls of pecan chips.
I lit it two hours ago and the smoke won't clear it's still heavy and white.
What should I do?

Sure it's not the pecan chips smoking?THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

Can you try stirring the lit lump such that the fresh lump comes up to the top. Maybe that will give you clear smoke soon. Use your ash tool or some long tongs for stirring the lit lump and wear welders gloves when doing it.LBGE & MiniOrlando, FL

usually old lump clears faster that new. I'd guess it's the wood smoke.

Put that butt on and rock and roll!

If you're worried, run it up to 350, put the butt on and then back it down over the next few hours.THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

I gotta agree with @theyolksonyou. I bet either you have an un carbonized piece of lump or its your smoke wood-----------------------------------------analyze adapt overcome2008 -Large BGE. 2013- Small BGE and 2015 - Mini. Henderson, Ky.

Ok I stirred the lump and held a fan by the bottom vent.. It's looking not so bad now. I feel much better. Im gonna add some more chips and put the butt on now.

Looks good sir. Enjoy the ride.

I always make sure the lump is burning clean and then add the wood for smoke, just to be certain the smoke is from the wood.

Tried and true method for the smoke-hold your hand over the top vent for a few seconds in the smoke. Then give it the smell test-"smells good, is good" and away you go. Gonna be great eats.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. If your old lump had grease drippings in it that could be the culprit.They/Them

The old lump was probably not the issue. As @lousubcap said, smell the smoke; if it smells good then you're set.
Also, did you soak the pecan chips? If so, what you may have been seeing was some steam.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. I'm not sure what Peggy does different, if anything. But it's the one dish she's kind of made her own.____________________Aurora, Ontario, Canada -
