How to Price a Used Egg

I hate to say it but I'm looking to part with my XL. I bought it last fall and just don't use it nearly as much I I'd like to.

XL egg
Nest
Handler
Plate Setter
Mates
BGE Cover

Plus a bunch of tools, charcoal and starters.

I'm about $1750 into everything. What would be a fair price to ask? It's been used 6 times, no cracks and looks new.

You need an intervention! Where are you located?

  • Haha. I know I know. I'm in North Central Mass. I absolutely love it but we have a little one at home now and between my hours at work, and a new addition to the family, outdoor cooking has taken a back seat.

It all depends on where your located. What's the demand for used Big Green Eggs in your area? They are more expensive used up north here in Minnesota compared to Georgia where you can find them all over Craigslist. Always start high on Craigslist since people will low ball you. Easier to lower the price than it is to raise it.  People will usually tell you to go half of what the value you have in it. There is a used Kelly Blue Book of eggs floating around the internet somewhere but I think it's useless. It's usually less than half of the value. I see eggs sell all the time over there half value. It all depends what the demand is like in your area

Thats too bad.  You have other eggs or is this your only one?

I was looking for a used egg a while back, but got off that mission when I realized a good chunk of the value is in the warranty (which doesn't transfer).  For me to be tempted by a used egg, it would have to be in great shape, and be less than half of egg fest prices.  Thats just me though, and hopefully you can do better than that.

I would guess in the $800-$900 range if you are lucky.

  • I know the warranty has value. What does the warranty cover again? I know it's a lifetime warranty but I never found out what it covers.

The lack of warranty is what kills the value of a second hand egg. A "Lifetime" warranty versus no warranty at all makes buying used a pretty big gamble for most people.

I do wish you luck though. My advice is to keep it unless you are strapped for cash. So what if you aren't using it now. Your child will get older and not require so much attention, and that beautiful egg will be there waiting on you when you are ready.

It all depends on where you are. Sounds high for my area but I've seen big changes in price depending on regions. Take about 10-15% off of retail and start their.

To give you some frame of reference, my wife just bought me a small egg - used & off Craigslist. I think she paid $200 - so less then half what they cost brand new and it came with all the accessories. Yes, no lifetime warranty and that's a value killer for sure - but for $200 for an egg, I'm happy with her purchase

Also it's hard to value because of warranty. I Currently have my eggs on CL and some other local sites because I want to upgrade to an XL. Eggs are worth more to me than the other guy because I have the warranty. But same instance, your eggs are worth less to me because they'll carry no warranty when I buy them.

Another note. An XL with nest at a fest is about $1100 and that's with a warranty.

I had bought a couple of used eggs and eventually sold those off and bought new ones, just so I would have a warranty.

FWIW I'd have a difficult time parting ways at a 50% loss on a cooker I have a Lifetime Warranty on. But, that's me.

You're not losing 50%.  You are only selling the egg.  You get to keep the warranty for life.

If I was close to you I would jump at the chance to pay $800.  However I doubt I would pay more than that.  If you don't need the money I would just wait until you have time again and start grilling again.  You'll want it back in a year or two.

I'll probably just hang onto it. It cooks amazing and I can't justify taking a 50% hit. I'm sure I'll thank myself later.

I agree to just keep it. It could be a negotiated point in selling your home one day. In the meantime, you can cook on it once in a while

You will. And the good lord willing, and you take care of it, it can become an heirloom. Your family will thank you, your chirldren's family will thank you.
