Egg that hasn't been used in several years

Hello Everyone,
I am getting a large bge from my uncle that hasn't been used in many years to accompany my xl.  Is there anything I need to be concerned about as far as re-breaking it in?  Should I start with low temps and work my way up like with a new egg?  Anything else to be aware of?  Thanks in Advance

If concerned light fire at 350 for a bit then kick it up to 600 to burn off any mold and clean it up some.

  • nope. Let it fly. The break in is all BS anyway. I would do a clean burn to get all the staleness or mold out and then use it as you wish. My clean burns are around 600 for an hour or 2. I think it's too hard on the egg and adjustable rigs etc to roll at nuclear temps for hours. 600 does the same thing and I don't have to adjust my bands after.

  • Great, thank you so much!
  • no worries. I would probably go through and tighten all the bolts for the bands and the casters if it's in a nest (I've never even thought of that until someone posted that theirs had come loose and their XL almost fell over when they lost a wheel).

give it a quick once over and then use it however you want.

I would do what @The Cen-Tex Smoker said. All of it is dead on. I just helped my grand dad clean his up that has sat unused for 3 years and did a delicious reverse sear steak for them that night on it.

Go ahead and replace the gasket because it's probably pure mold by now.  Contact @RRP for that. Besides that burn in off and cook away.
