How big of a a butt can be smoked on a Mini?
Like new car fever, I'm think I have new egg fever.... a Mini as my 2nd Egg.
For most cooks for this empty nest , not sure I need to fire the Large.

This was a 4.7 lber on my mini Columbia, SC --- LBGE 2011 -- MINI BGE 2013 -
For what it is worth I use the mini 75% of the time. Only use large for ribs, brisket, larger cooks. Mini is a beastColumbia, SC --- LBGE 2011 -- MINI BGE 2013

Mini or mini max? Title says mini max. Body says mini. Different grids, different answers.

Kevin @ksmyrl recently did a 10# turbo and said it was his best yet. Maybe he'll weigh in on this.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL

There were a couple guys at the Sunshine State Eggfest that did a 9# butt on a Mini Max.

That's funny right there, I don't care who you are.tarheelmatt said:I'm about as confused as a chameleon in a Skittles bag...
@nphuskerfl is correct, I did a 10.3lb butt on my mini-MAX over the weekend. I dialed the temp back to around 280-300 for most of the cook so not really a turbo, but not really a low and slow either. I wrapped it (a first for me) at the 6 hr mark when it probed 170ish. I let it ride 3 more hours and it turned out beautiful. One of my tastiest butts yet. The edges rubbed slightly on the dome as it closed and I had to pull the thermo out almost all the way so it wouldn't touch the meat , but it worked out well. Much to my surprise I had nearly 1/2 the load of lump left when it was done. I couldn't believe it. I did have it loaded as full as I could get it, the coals were touching the plate setter when I lit it. It was fun, I continue to be impressed with the mini-max.
Fish, Hunt, Cook....anything else?

@ksmyrl I have a 7+ pounder that I have to cook this week. You just talked me right into using the MM.

Check out my last post here: http://eggheadforum.com/discussion/1182154/mini-max-beef-ribs#latest for more details. I had trouble getting the temp up when I put that much cold meat on the egg at first, but all in all it was awesome. No room for a drip pan either if using the stock plate setter.theyolksonyou said:@ksmyrl I have a 7+ pounder that I have to cook this week. You just talked me right into using the MM.

Soooo, the "Mini" sounds more feminine and we live in the age of Caitlin Jenner yet the "mini MAX" sounds a bit more manly....
Sooo, I'l lust after the mini, NOT CAITLINE and will be buying a MAX!

The approach I like when "turboing" a butt is to actually go relatively low to start - say 250. That way, you give the butt a bit more time to pick up the smoke. Then when it hits the stall you wrap it in foil and bump to 350. After foiling, the temperature rise is nearly linear with time, so you can project the finish very accurately.ksmyrl said:

What's interesting is that in the past, when I've done this on my large - I think it's been quite a bit faster than the hour per pound you're reporting. I'm going to try a butt on my MiniMax this weekend - good to know I might need some more time."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike
