Mine stopped asking. I just offered for her to light the egg. End of statement.

I have the MAPP with the hose.  I switched to that after the one without the hose, nozzle is attached directly to tank, caught on fire.  I read it wasn't designed to  be lit and turned upside down...which was exactly what I was doing.  Anyway, now there is a hose, the tank sits on my table so it remains in the proper position. No more issue.  I use the Egg 3 or 4 times a week and I won't go through 2 tanks a year.  Cheap and easy.

The mapp torch I use (Turbo Torch st-33) works in any position, rotates, and will stay lit upside down as long as you need. It is for professional plumbing. I was maybe $40.00? Been using about a tank every six to eight months. Egg two-three times a week.

Veggie oil and a half sheet of paper towel works great ready to go in about 10 minutes.

I have gone through multiple lighters over the years. The BGE electric lighter, the Looft, the starter cubes, etc. the MAP torch is pretty awesome. That is my current method. It's portable, does not require a power outlet and the replacement cylinders are very inexpensive and last a long time. I'm probably 6 mo in on the current cylinder and it still has plenty of fuel...

I have tried a bunch of lighting methods, have a MAPP torch, but most times I use my Weber chimney with a couple of sheets of newspaper.  For a L&S cook, I add only a few pieces of lump, if I want a big hot fire (think Pizza), I fill it about halfway.  In 5  minutes, the chimney is fully lit, I dump into the egg, and the VOC's burn off fast.  In fact, if I do not have wood in with the lump, I pretty much have no VOC's.

FWIW, I did a cook at my local egg dealers last year, had to start with the cubes, and HATED how long it took to get a fire going and the egg up to temp.

So after alot of thought and discussion, I went back to the weed burner.  Got it again from Harbor Freight for $30.  No more fuel pouches.  Flame on!

I use the Rutland Safe Lite Fire Starter Squares I get from Amazon. I use 1-2 to start the fire. (about 20 min to get going)
I don't like the wax cube type because the ones I had were messy. When I would get one out of the aluminium covered carton some of the wax would crack off the edge of the cube. I guess I could have opened them over the egg rather than the table and it would not have been a problem.

I have used a Mapp self ignition torch in the past and it didn't work well. I had to hold it in position too long and the heat eventually killed the igniter on the torch.

This looks pretty cool from bbq guru:

That harbor freight burner looks really good, better than the one from bbq guru.
I think I will pick up one.

The other thing is "MAPP" is not what it used to be.....they outlawed the stuff in 2008.  It's still called "MAPP" (substitute), but it's not as hot from what I've heard.

It wasn't outlawed. When MAPP gas dissappeared it was because there was just one remaining plant in North America (in Canada) that was still making the stuff and they went out of business. Actually the parent company didn't go out of business they shut down the factory where it was made as they had it up for sale for more than a year but nobody wanted it so they just shut it down.

Why nobody else stepped up to offer the "original recipe" is uncertain but some suspect there was a patent issue involved.

I've been using the Bernzomatic TS4000 head for many years. The igniter can be finicky, especially if it is left out in the rain (like mine always is :|).

They can be replaced. Bernzomatic won't sell replacements but the piezo thingy is a fairly common unit used by many other things and can be readily found on ebay.

There are instructions on how to replace them but offhand I don't recall the website so Google is your friend.

I like the TS4000 as it has a locking button so I don't have to keep my finger on the trigger and can hold the very end of the bottle to hold it upside down/sideways and light the charcoal and not melt my skin.

I had remembered seeing one in a Youtube video and did a search for it.
The BBQ Guru site did not have them.
I continued the search and found:
    http://www.fredsmusicandbbq.com/BBQ_GURU_GOLF_CLUB_CHARCOAL_STARTING_SYSTEM_p/bbggolfclub.htm
However they appear to be out of stock here as well.
I'm guessing they are no longer being made.
I would suggest looking at Harbor Freight or Northern Tool for one of the above mentioned weed type torches.

That looks like a good choice also.
It appears that this one has been discontinued by the manufacture.

I picked up a JT850 tonight at Lowes.
The push button ignition on it does not work.
However I don't think its worth exchanging because the igniters on torches never seem to last anyway. It's easy enough to light the torch with on of the small kitchen lighters.

I did meet someone interesting in Lowes tonight. Charles Barkley was there shopping. I spoke briefly and he complemented my son on the Auburn War Eagle shirt that he was wearing. He seems to be a really nice guy. I didn't try to talk to him at length because I'm sure he gets tired of being mobbed when he is out in public. My wife had ran into him before when my son was just a few years old, my son was startled by him because how big of a guy he is. He's huge. My wife told me he placed his hand on my sons head and it almost wrapped over. His hands are huge. He is always wearing a big smile when he's out about town.

Have both Mapp & Weed Burner (for 4 plus years). I only use the Mapp on the Mini (damn weed burner is just too much). But use the Weed Burner on both Larges and Mini-Max as it just gets the job do so much faster.
Now when I travel with the Larges to FL I take only the Mapp as for size and a much smaller explosion if all goes bad on the trip. Get the weed burner replaced. I would never be happy using a Mapp for the Larges and MM.
