new guy here with first mini flashback

Hey folks -
got my large egg about two weeks ago. Have taken it kind of slow with a couple of cooks under my belt. Cooked some skirt steak last night (which was my first real hot, short cook) and was at about 650. Burped, opened the lid, lost the hair on my hand and about half way up my arm. Been doing some reading on it and think I can minimize it moving forward, but I puckered up a little bit and gave me a reality check. One needs to be careful.

Anyways, thought I should break the seal with my first post and loving the egg so far - hope for many years of good food on it.

Every now and again I forget, and get a scary surprise.  Most of the time, it's such a habit, now, that I find myself about to "burp" it when it's cold and I'm about to start a fire!  :)

Welcome to the forum, and I'm sure you'll have many years of wonderful cooks on your BGE!

When I did it I had long sleeve shirt on, but it got m y eye brows and the top of my head.  I now burp by only opening it an inch and do it a couple times to make sure.  Be careful, I have been told it can shoot out the bottom vent at times.

It may be a bother but at HIGH temps it's worth it to open the top and bottom and then burp it before fully opening the lid.  That said, I still lost the hair on my hand and wrist this weekend making perfect steaks.

I was rushing one night on a pizza cook and forgot to burp the egg and singed my eyebrows and eyelashes.

Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey.  Yup, the BGE can be an occupational hazard with the high temp cooks infused with those adult supervisory beverages.

Glad to know that I am not the only one. It is a lesson I will not forget for a while. And the skirt steak was pretty fantastic.
