Bone in or out? Assumption is that bone-in is more flavor, but can I safely assume good results with boneless as well? Anything particular I need to do if it's boneless (tie it up, etc)?

Bone does not add any flavor to the meat. I sometimes tie boneless, sometimes not. Depends on how the butt looks. Some appear almost intact with just a small piece hanging loose. Others appear as if someone tried to spatchcock the butt, these really need to be tied (or held together in a v-rack).Southeast Florida - LBGE
In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -
if you get a small boneless, look to do a boston butt burnt ends..... @SGH had posted on it recently I believe.... Its worth the try. I'm serving it at Mother's Day to the entire clan that coming to our place!

I tie boneless.I also put a dry rub on it before I tie it back together. If I'm cooking for a group i'll go to Costco and get theirs and there boneless.as the gentleman before me mentioned, it's really the meat that makes the flavor.you'll also fine that different buts will cook differently. In saying that, i've never had bad bbq, some just better than others.Don't get caught up on details just enjoy it.

Good deal, thanks all for the tips. Wasn't sure what constitutes a "small" boneless, but the one I was looking at was around 5.5 lbs vs the 6.5 lb bone in. Main thing is I have to drive about 30 minutes each way to get the Bone in instead of 5 minutes each way for the boneless
